Drug interactions
I would like to ask the doctor two questions.
I was prescribed Amoxicillin trihydrate and Potassium clavulanate for lymphadenitis on April 10, and I am currently still taking it along with the contraceptive pill, Priligy.
I would like to know if there are any interactions between these two medications.
My second question is regarding the contraceptive pill: after finishing the first pack, do I need to take the second pack for a full seven days to achieve contraceptive effectiveness, or does the second pack provide contraceptive protection regardless of how many days I take it? Thank you, doctor.

Hello, the likelihood of the medication affecting you is low.
Birth control pills must be taken at the same time every day; when taken correctly, they can achieve a 99% effectiveness in preventing pregnancy.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.

More Info
When considering the potential interactions between Amoxicillin (specifically Amoxicillin trihydrate and Potassium clavulanate) and contraceptives like the one you mentioned (祈麗安錠), it's important to understand how these medications work and their effects on each other.
1. Drug Interactions: Amoxicillin and Contraceptives
Amoxicillin is a penicillin-type antibiotic that is commonly used to treat various bacterial infections, including lymphadenitis (infection of the lymph nodes). On the other hand, contraceptives, particularly hormonal ones, work by regulating hormones to prevent ovulation and thus prevent pregnancy.
Historically, there has been concern that antibiotics could potentially reduce the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives. However, the evidence supporting this interaction is limited. Most studies indicate that antibiotics like Amoxicillin do not significantly affect the efficacy of hormonal contraceptives. The primary concern arises with certain antibiotics, particularly rifampicin and rifabutin, which are known to induce liver enzymes that can metabolize contraceptive hormones more quickly, potentially reducing their effectiveness. Amoxicillin, however, does not have this effect.
In your case, taking Amoxicillin while on your contraceptive pill should not lead to a significant interaction that would compromise the effectiveness of your contraceptive method. However, it is always prudent to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice, especially if you experience any gastrointestinal disturbances (like vomiting or diarrhea) while on antibiotics, as these could affect the absorption of the contraceptive.
2. Contraceptive Efficacy and Timing
Regarding your second question about the timing of taking the contraceptive pills, it is essential to follow the instructions provided with your specific contraceptive method. Generally, for most combined oral contraceptives, it is recommended to take the pills consistently for seven consecutive days to achieve maximum contraceptive efficacy.
If you have completed the first pack and are starting the second pack, the contraceptive effect should continue as long as you take the pills correctly. The key is to take the pills at the same time each day and not to miss any doses. If you start the second pack immediately after finishing the first one, you should maintain contraceptive protection throughout the cycle.
If you have any doubts or if you missed any doses during the first or second pack, it is advisable to use a backup method of contraception (like condoms) until you have taken the pills consistently for seven days in the new pack.
In summary, Amoxicillin should not interfere with the effectiveness of your contraceptive pill, and as long as you take your contraceptives as directed, you should maintain their effectiveness. Always consult with your healthcare provider for any specific concerns or unusual symptoms you may experience while on these medications.
