Lip swelling
Hello doctor, my lips often appear swollen and they also peel.
It's not the sausage lip type, but they look puffy.
Additionally, the area around my lips is dark.
Could this be related to spleen deficiency?
Mr. Gao, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/05/25
Dr. Gao Peiyi reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
It is unlikely to be a deficiency of the spleen.
Based on the description, it may be a chronic infection or an allergic reaction, predominantly related to wind-heat or damp-heat.
Over time, it could lead to dryness and blood deficiency.
The above is merely speculation; actual appearance would provide a more accurate assessment.

Understanding lip swelling through the lens of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can provide valuable insights into potential underlying causes and treatment options. In TCM, the body is viewed as an interconnected system where imbalances can manifest in various ways, including changes in the appearance of the lips.
Your description of swollen lips that also peel, along with the presence of dark pigmentation around the lips, suggests a possible deficiency in the Spleen and Stomach, which are crucial organs in TCM responsible for digestion and the transformation of nutrients. A Spleen Qi deficiency can lead to insufficient blood production, resulting in symptoms such as swelling, dryness, and changes in skin color. The Spleen is also linked to the body's ability to maintain fluid balance; thus, a deficiency may lead to fluid retention, which could explain the swelling of your lips.
In TCM, the condition of the lips is often associated with the health of the Spleen and Stomach. Swollen lips can indicate an accumulation of dampness or phlegm in the body, which can be a result of poor digestion or dietary habits. Foods that are overly rich, greasy, or difficult to digest can contribute to this condition. Additionally, emotional stress can weaken the Spleen, further exacerbating symptoms.
The dark pigmentation around your lips may also indicate a deficiency or stagnation of blood flow, which can be related to the same Spleen deficiency. In TCM, the color of the lips can reflect the state of the blood and Qi in the body. Dark or discolored lips may suggest that the body is not adequately nourishing the tissues, which can be a sign of underlying health issues.
To address these concerns, TCM practitioners often recommend dietary adjustments, herbal remedies, and lifestyle changes. Here are some suggestions:
1. Dietary Modifications: Focus on a balanced diet that supports Spleen health. Incorporate warm, cooked foods that are easy to digest, such as soups, stews, and steamed vegetables. Avoid excessive consumption of raw or cold foods, as they can weaken the Spleen. Foods like sweet potatoes, oats, and ginger can be beneficial.
2. Herbal Remedies: Certain herbal formulas may help tonify the Spleen and improve Qi and blood circulation. Common herbs used in TCM for Spleen deficiency include ginseng, astragalus, and licorice root. However, it is essential to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner to determine the most appropriate herbs for your specific condition.
3. Lifestyle Changes: Stress management techniques such as meditation, tai chi, or gentle yoga can help strengthen the Spleen and improve overall well-being. Ensuring adequate rest and sleep is also crucial for recovery.
4. Consultation with a TCM Practitioner: A thorough evaluation by a qualified TCM practitioner can provide personalized insights and treatment plans tailored to your specific symptoms and constitution. They may also perform acupuncture or other therapies to help restore balance.
In summary, the swelling and pigmentation of your lips may indeed be related to Spleen deficiency in TCM. By addressing dietary habits, incorporating herbal remedies, and managing stress, you may find relief from these symptoms. It is always advisable to seek professional guidance to ensure a comprehensive approach to your health.
