Can taking Puvira prevent pregnancy?
Hello, I recently visited a gynecologist regarding an issue with endometrial hyperplasia and underwent a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure.
This month, I started taking Provera (medroxyprogesterone acetate) 5 mg for treatment.
I began taking two tablets twice a day starting from the seventh day after my menstrual period, and I will continue this for 20 days.
After 20 days, I will stop the medication and resume taking it on the first day of my next menstrual period.
I would like to know if this regimen provides contraceptive effects.
Additionally, I am curious about how many days into the next month’s treatment it would be safer to engage in unprotected sexual intercourse.
I have found little information online about using Provera for contraception, and it seems less effective compared to other contraceptive methods.
I am concerned that after taking it for seven days next month, the concentration may not be sufficient to achieve contraceptive efficacy.
Thank you, doctor.

More Info
Povera, which contains the active ingredient medroxyprogesterone acetate, is primarily used as a hormonal treatment for various conditions, including endometrial hyperplasia, as you mentioned. While it is not typically classified as a primary method of contraception, it can have contraceptive effects due to its hormonal properties.
Medroxyprogesterone acetate works by mimicking the effects of progesterone, a hormone that plays a crucial role in regulating the menstrual cycle and maintaining pregnancy. When taken in the prescribed manner, it can help to thin the endometrial lining, making it less conducive to implantation of a fertilized egg. Additionally, it can suppress ovulation, which is a key mechanism in preventing pregnancy. However, the effectiveness of Povera as a contraceptive method is not as high as that of dedicated contraceptive methods like birth control pills, implants, or IUDs.
In your case, since you are taking Povera for endometrial hyperplasia, it is essential to follow your healthcare provider's instructions carefully. You mentioned starting the medication on the seventh day of your menstrual cycle and continuing for 20 days. This regimen is designed to manage your condition, but it may not provide reliable contraception during the first cycle of use. Generally, it is recommended to use an additional form of contraception, such as condoms, during the first month of treatment to ensure adequate contraceptive protection.
Regarding your question about when it would be safer to engage in unprotected intercourse, it is crucial to understand that the contraceptive effects of Povera may take some time to establish. While some women may experience ovulation suppression within the first few days of taking the medication, it is typically advised to wait at least one full cycle (or about a month) before relying solely on Povera for contraception. Therefore, if you start taking the medication on the first day of your next menstrual cycle, it may take a few weeks before you can consider it effective as a contraceptive method.
In summary, while Povera can have contraceptive effects, it is not primarily designed for that purpose, and its effectiveness may vary from person to person. It is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice based on your specific situation. They can provide guidance on the most effective contraceptive methods for you, especially considering your medical history and current treatment for endometrial hyperplasia. Using additional contraception during the initial treatment phase is advisable to ensure you are adequately protected against unintended pregnancy.
