The duration of bleeding after a medical abortion typically lasts about one to two weeks?
Hello, currently regarding the medication abortion status: I took the first dose on May 2, the second dose on May 4, and started bleeding after taking the second dose.
I had a follow-up appointment on May 9, and after a vaginal ultrasound, the doctor said everything was cleared out.
I mentioned to the doctor that I was still experiencing light bleeding, but it was not much (about one small pad per day), and the doctor said it was fine.
By May 18, the bleeding had mostly stopped, but after a day or two, it started again and has continued until now, May 31 (the amount is still light, about one small pad per day).
Is this normal? Do I need to schedule another appointment? Please help clarify, thank you.

After a medical abortion, it is common for women to experience bleeding, known as lochia. The duration and amount of bleeding can vary significantly from person to person, but there are some general patterns and expectations that can help you understand what you might be experiencing.
1. Duration of Bleeding: After a medical abortion, bleeding typically begins shortly after taking the medication, with the heaviest bleeding occurring within the first few days. Most women will notice that the bleeding gradually decreases over time. Generally, the bleeding can last anywhere from a few days to several weeks. In your case, since you mentioned that you started bleeding after taking the second dose on May 4 and that it has continued intermittently until May 31, this is not unusual. It is common for women to experience spotting or light bleeding for several weeks after the procedure, especially as the body adjusts and the uterus heals.
2. What is Normal?: The bleeding you described—light enough to require only a small pad each day—is typically considered normal. It is not uncommon for women to have intermittent bleeding or spotting for weeks after a medical abortion. The color of the blood may also change from bright red to darker shades as the bleeding decreases. If the bleeding remains light and does not increase significantly, it is usually not a cause for concern.
3. When to Seek Medical Attention: You should consider returning to your healthcare provider if you experience any of the following:
- Heavy bleeding that soaks through two or more pads in an hour for two consecutive hours.
- Severe abdominal pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter pain medication.
- Fever or chills, which could indicate an infection.
- Foul-smelling discharge.
- Any other symptoms that cause you significant concern.
4. Follow-Up Care: Since you have already had a follow-up appointment on May 9, and your doctor indicated that everything appeared normal, it may not be necessary to return unless you experience the concerning symptoms mentioned above. However, if your bleeding continues for an extended period or if you have any new symptoms, it is always best to consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice.
5. Understanding Your Body: It is important to remember that every woman's body responds differently to medical abortion. Factors such as hormonal changes, individual health conditions, and the timing of the abortion can all influence bleeding patterns. If you have any lingering concerns about your recovery or if you feel that something is not right, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for reassurance or further evaluation.
In summary, light bleeding or spotting for several weeks after a medical abortion is generally normal. However, if you notice any significant changes in your bleeding pattern or experience concerning symptoms, it is important to seek medical advice. Your health and peace of mind are paramount, so don't hesitate to communicate with your healthcare provider about any concerns you may have.
