There is a lump at the anal opening?

Hello doctor, today while I was showering, I felt a small round lump at the anal opening.
It doesn't hurt when I press on it, and I can't feel it much.
I took a picture with my phone, and it looks the same color as the anus.
Should I be concerned about this?

Xiao Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2024/06/07

Dr. Hu Ziren reply Oncology

It should just be normal glands or tissue, so there's no need to worry.

When it comes to discovering a bump near the anus, it’s understandable to feel concerned. However, there are several factors to consider before jumping to conclusions. The bump you described as small, round, and painless could be indicative of a variety of conditions, some of which are benign and others that may require medical attention.

One common cause of a painless bump near the anus is a hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the lower rectum or anus, and they can be internal or external. External hemorrhoids can sometimes appear as small lumps near the anal opening and may not cause any pain unless they become thrombosed (clotted). If the bump is indeed a hemorrhoid, it may not require treatment unless it becomes painful or bothersome.

Another possibility is a skin tag, which is a small, benign growth of skin that can occur around the anus. Skin tags are usually painless and can vary in size. They are often harmless and do not require treatment unless they become irritated or you wish to have them removed for cosmetic reasons.

Additionally, the bump could be a sebaceous cyst, which is a small, non-cancerous lump beneath the skin that can occur anywhere on the body, including the anal area. These cysts are typically painless and filled with a fatty substance. They may not require treatment unless they become infected or bothersome.

In some cases, a bump near the anus could indicate a more serious condition, such as an anal abscess or fistula, which can cause pain, swelling, and sometimes fever. These conditions often require medical intervention.
If the bump changes in size, becomes painful, or if you notice any other symptoms such as bleeding, discharge, or changes in bowel habits, it is important to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests, such as imaging studies, if necessary.

In summary, while a small, painless bump near the anus is often not a cause for concern, it is essential to monitor it for any changes. If you have any doubts or if the bump persists, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. They can provide a definitive diagnosis and recommend appropriate treatment if needed. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your health.

This is likely an acute thrombosed hemorrhoid caused by diarrhea. Applying an external hemorrhoid ointment should suffice. Since a colonoscopy was performed a year and a half ago, there is no urgent need for another examination.
