Can infinite radio waves cause facial sagging?
Hello, Doctor.
A friend of mine has rolling acne scars and experienced significant improvement after one session of radiofrequency treatment.
He recommended that I try it as I have the same issue.
I have already undergone various treatments for my scars, including fractional laser, Ultherapy, dermal fillers, TCA peels, and picosecond laser, but none have been effective.
I feel very self-conscious and distressed every day.
This radiofrequency treatment has given me a glimmer of hope, but I came across a claim online stating that radiofrequency works by using high heat to "burn" aging collagen, forcing the body to self-repair and produce new collagen for tightening and filling effects.
However, the downside is that it may also damage fibroblasts, leading to a decrease in collagen production.
With each session, the materials for collagen synthesis may diminish, resulting in sagging skin over time, unless one resorts to hyaluronic acid fillers to counteract it.
Reading this has made me very worried, as I fear that I won't receive honest answers at aesthetic clinics and that I might have to undergo lifelong treatments to prevent sagging.
I would like to ask if this claim is just an internet rumor.
Thank you for your response.

Radiofrequency (RF) treatment has gained popularity in the field of aesthetic medicine, particularly for its ability to improve skin texture and reduce the appearance of scars, including rolling acne scars. Your concerns about the potential side effects of RF treatment, particularly regarding facial sagging, are valid and worth addressing.
Firstly, it is essential to understand how RF treatment works. The procedure utilizes radiofrequency energy to heat the dermal layers of the skin, stimulating collagen production and promoting tissue tightening. This process can lead to improved skin elasticity and a more youthful appearance. The heat generated during the treatment encourages the body’s natural healing response, which results in the formation of new collagen fibers over time.
Regarding the myth that RF treatment can lead to facial sagging due to the destruction of fibroblasts (the cells responsible for collagen production), it is important to clarify that while RF does indeed heat the skin, it does not "burn" or destroy fibroblasts in a way that would lead to a decrease in collagen production. Instead, the controlled heating is designed to stimulate these cells, encouraging them to produce more collagen. The key is that RF treatments are performed at specific temperatures and durations that are safe and effective, minimizing the risk of damaging the skin or its cellular structures.
Concerns about facial sagging often arise from a misunderstanding of how collagen works in the skin. As we age, our natural collagen production decreases, leading to sagging and wrinkles. RF treatments aim to counteract this natural decline by boosting collagen synthesis. Therefore, rather than causing sagging, RF treatments are intended to improve skin firmness and elasticity.
It is also worth noting that the effectiveness of RF treatments can vary based on individual skin types, the severity of skin issues, and the specific technology used. While some patients may see significant improvements after one session, others may require multiple treatments to achieve desired results. It is crucial to have realistic expectations and to consult with a qualified medical professional who can assess your skin condition and recommend an appropriate treatment plan.
As for the concern about needing to undergo RF treatments continuously to maintain results, it is true that the effects of RF are not permanent. Over time, the natural aging process will continue, and collagen production will gradually decline. However, many patients find that the results of RF treatments can last for several months to a couple of years, depending on individual factors. Maintenance treatments may be recommended to sustain the results, but this does not imply that one will be dependent on RF treatments for life.
In conclusion, the fears surrounding RF treatment leading to facial sagging due to fibroblast destruction are largely unfounded. When performed correctly by a skilled practitioner, RF treatments can be a safe and effective option for improving skin texture and firmness. It is always advisable to discuss any concerns with a qualified dermatologist or aesthetic practitioner who can provide personalized advice based on your specific skin needs and goals. Remember, informed decisions are key to achieving the best outcomes in aesthetic treatments.
