Facial Numbness When Touching Left Side: What Could It Mean? - Neurology

Touching the face can cause numbness?

Hello, doctor.
I have noticed that when I touch my left cheek or left ear, I experience a tingling sensation in my face, while touching my right cheek does not produce this sensation.
This has been ongoing for quite some time.
I would like to know if this could indicate a serious issue, or if it might simply be a difference in sensitivity in different areas (I am concerned it could be a precursor to facial nerve dysfunction).
Thank you.

Dr. Cai Zongzhang reply Neurology

Hello: The above symptoms are suggestive of trigeminal nerve inflammation.
It is recommended to visit a neurology outpatient clinic.

Facial numbness, particularly when localized to one side of the face, can be concerning and may indicate a variety of underlying conditions. In your case, experiencing numbness or a tingling sensation on the left side of your face when touched, while the right side remains unaffected, warrants further investigation.
One potential explanation for your symptoms could be related to the trigeminal nerve, which is responsible for sensation in the face. If this nerve becomes inflamed or irritated, it can lead to sensations of numbness or tingling in the affected areas. This condition is known as trigeminal neuralgia, and it can sometimes be triggered by factors such as stress, fatigue, or even certain movements. However, it is important to note that this is just one possibility among many.

Another consideration is the possibility of facial nerve dysfunction, which could manifest as facial weakness or asymmetry. However, you mentioned that your facial movements remain normal, which is a reassuring sign. Conditions such as Bell's palsy, which can cause sudden facial weakness, typically present with additional symptoms, including drooping of the mouth or inability to close the eye on the affected side. Since you do not report these symptoms, it may be less likely that you are experiencing a facial nerve disorder.

Additionally, your symptoms could be related to other factors such as muscle tension, particularly if you have a history of headaches or stress. Tension in the muscles of the face and neck can lead to sensations of numbness or discomfort. This is often seen in individuals who experience tension-type headaches or migraines.

It's also worth considering that changes in sensation can sometimes be linked to systemic issues, such as vitamin deficiencies (e.g., vitamin B12), diabetes, or even multiple sclerosis, although these conditions typically present with a broader range of symptoms.
Given that your symptoms have persisted for some time, it is advisable to seek a thorough evaluation from a healthcare professional, preferably a neurologist. They may recommend diagnostic tests such as nerve conduction studies or imaging studies (like an MRI) to assess the integrity of the nerves and rule out any serious underlying conditions.

In summary, while your symptoms could be related to a variety of benign causes, it is essential to have a comprehensive evaluation to determine the exact cause and to rule out any significant issues. Early diagnosis and intervention can be crucial in managing any potential conditions effectively. If you experience any additional symptoms such as weakness, changes in vision, or severe pain, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.
