Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) and Cialis?

Hello doctor, can taking 5mg of Cialis help reduce mild to moderate benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH)? My prostate was measured at 28.8, and I previously took 2mg of Tamsulosin along with Cialis daily, which made urination very smooth, with about two nighttime trips to the bathroom.
After stopping Cialis, I noticed that urination is not as smooth, and my nighttime trips have increased to about three to four times.
Can Cialis help shrink the prostate?

Dr. Du Shixi reply Urology

Hello: It will not shrink; this medication has been shown in medical studies to aid urinary function.
Wishing you good health.

More Info

Cialis, known generically as tadalafil, is primarily used to treat erectile dysfunction and the symptoms of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), which is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate gland. While Cialis does not directly reduce the size of the prostate, it can help alleviate some of the symptoms associated with BPH, such as urinary frequency, urgency, and difficulty in urination.

When the prostate enlarges, it can compress the urethra, leading to various urinary symptoms. Cialis works by relaxing the smooth muscles in the prostate and bladder, which can improve urine flow and reduce the symptoms of BPH. This mechanism is beneficial for men who experience discomfort due to prostate enlargement, as it can help them urinate more easily and reduce nighttime urination (nocturia).

In your case, you mentioned that after stopping Cialis, you experienced a decrease in urinary flow and an increase in nighttime urination frequency. This could indicate that the medication was effectively managing your symptoms while you were taking it. However, it is important to note that Cialis does not shrink the prostate itself; rather, it helps manage the symptoms caused by the enlarged prostate.

If you are considering using Cialis for your prostate symptoms, it is essential to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can evaluate your specific situation, including the size of your prostate and the severity of your symptoms, to determine the most appropriate treatment plan. In some cases, doctors may recommend a combination of medications to address both erectile dysfunction and BPH symptoms.

In addition to medications like Cialis, lifestyle changes can also play a significant role in managing BPH symptoms. These may include:
1. Dietary Adjustments: Reducing caffeine and alcohol intake can help minimize urinary urgency and frequency. A diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats may also support prostate health.

2. Fluid Management: Monitoring fluid intake, especially in the evening, can help reduce nighttime urination.

3. Regular Exercise: Physical activity can improve overall health and may help alleviate some urinary symptoms.

4. Pelvic Floor Exercises: Strengthening the pelvic floor muscles can improve bladder control and reduce urinary symptoms.

5. Regular Check-ups: Regular visits to your healthcare provider for monitoring prostate health and urinary symptoms are crucial, especially as you age.

In summary, while Cialis can help alleviate the symptoms associated with prostate enlargement, it does not reduce the size of the prostate itself. If you find that your symptoms improve while taking Cialis, it may be beneficial to continue its use under the guidance of your healthcare provider. Always consult with your doctor before making any changes to your medication regimen or treatment plan.
