Skin Red Spots Medical Consultation
Hello, doctor! Last year, I went for acupuncture due to discomfort in my hand, and now I have red spots on my arm and shoulder (upon closer inspection, it seems there are also needle marks).
It's been over a year, and they haven't disappeared.
I found online that this might be related to platelets, but my tests have all come back normal.
I would like to know if there is a solution for this.
Should I see a dermatologist, or is there another specialty I should consult? Thank you!

You can visit a dermatologist, where a dermatoscope is available to assist with examinations.

Persistent red dots on the skin, especially after acupuncture, can be concerning and may indicate a variety of underlying issues. Given your description of the red dots remaining for over a year, it is advisable to consult a dermatologist for a thorough evaluation. Dermatologists specialize in skin conditions and can provide a more accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.
The red dots you are experiencing could be a result of several factors. One possibility is that they are petechiae, which are small red or purple spots caused by bleeding under the skin. While you mentioned that your platelet counts are normal, it’s important to consider other potential causes, such as allergic reactions, infections, or even irritation from the acupuncture needles. Sometimes, the skin can react to the materials used in acupuncture, or the technique itself may lead to localized inflammation.
Another possibility is that these red dots are a form of dermatitis or an allergic reaction to something that came into contact with your skin. This could be due to lotions, soaps, or even the acupuncture needles if they were not sterile or if your skin had a reaction to them.
In terms of treatment, it is essential to avoid self-diagnosing or treating the condition without professional guidance. A dermatologist can perform a physical examination and may recommend further tests, such as a skin biopsy, if necessary, to determine the exact nature of the red dots. They may also inquire about your medical history, any medications you are taking, and any other symptoms you may have experienced.
If the dermatologist determines that the red dots are indeed related to the acupuncture, they may suggest topical treatments to reduce inflammation or irritation. In some cases, corticosteroid creams can help alleviate redness and swelling. If an allergic reaction is suspected, they may recommend antihistamines or other medications to manage the symptoms.
It’s also worth noting that if the dermatologist finds that the red dots are not purely a dermatological issue, they may refer you to another specialist, such as a hematologist, to further investigate any underlying blood disorders or systemic issues.
In summary, while it may be tempting to search for solutions online, the best course of action is to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation and tailored treatment plan based on your specific condition. Additionally, keeping a record of any changes in your skin, including when the red dots appeared and any associated symptoms, can be helpful for your consultation. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to seek professional advice.
