If your menstrual period is late, could you be pregnant?
Dear Dr.
Lin,
My last menstrual period started on January 28.
Typically, my menstrual cycle ranges from 28 to 31 days, but now it is March 8, and my period has not arrived yet.
After February 12, I had sexual intercourse with my boyfriend several times, but he always practiced withdrawal.
Recently, I have been experiencing symptoms that usually indicate my period is coming, such as increased acne, more vaginal discharge, and occasional lower abdominal pain on both sides at night.
However, my period still hasn't come.
Could you please explain what might be causing this? I am very worried about the possibility of being pregnant, which has been causing me a lot of stress.
Thank you for your help!

If there has been no penetration and ejaculation outside the body, the likelihood of pregnancy is naturally low.
If your period is late and you are experiencing lower limb pain, aside from excluding pregnancy-related conditions, there are other possibilities such as: 1.
ovarian cysts, 2.
cervical inflammation causing retrograde menstruation, and 3.
stress leading to menstrual irregularities.
However, if you have miscalculated your menstrual cycle, it is still important to rule out the possibility of pregnancy.
Therefore, you can take a home pregnancy test, but the best approach is to consult a healthcare provider.

Delayed periods can indeed raise concerns about pregnancy, especially for individuals with a regular menstrual cycle. However, it is essential to understand that a delayed period does not automatically indicate pregnancy. Various factors can contribute to menstrual irregularities, including stress, hormonal imbalances, lifestyle changes, and medical conditions.
In your case, you mentioned that your last menstrual period was on January 28, and you typically have a cycle of 28 to 31 days. As of March 8, you are experiencing a delay of over a month. While the timing of your sexual activity is relevant, the fact that your boyfriend practiced withdrawal (pulling out) reduces the likelihood of pregnancy, although it is not a foolproof method of contraception. Sperm can sometimes be present in pre-ejaculatory fluid, which could lead to pregnancy, but the risk is generally lower compared to unprotected intercourse.
The symptoms you are experiencing—such as increased acne, changes in discharge, and abdominal discomfort—can be attributed to various factors, including hormonal fluctuations that occur during your menstrual cycle. Stress is another significant factor that can affect your menstrual cycle. The anxiety surrounding the possibility of pregnancy can create a cycle of stress that may further delay your period.
It is also worth noting that menstrual cycles can be influenced by lifestyle factors such as diet, exercise, sleep patterns, and emotional well-being. If you have recently experienced changes in any of these areas, it could contribute to your delayed period.
Given that you are feeling anxious about the possibility of pregnancy, it would be prudent to take a home pregnancy test. These tests are generally reliable when taken after a missed period. If the test is negative and your period still does not arrive, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a more sensitive blood test to check for pregnancy and evaluate other potential causes for your delayed period.
In summary, while a delayed period can be a sign of pregnancy, it is not definitive. Stress and hormonal changes can also play significant roles in menstrual irregularities. If you continue to experience anxiety about your situation, consider reaching out to a healthcare professional for personalized advice and support. They can help you navigate your concerns and provide guidance on how to manage stress and maintain your reproductive health.
