Can a person with urticaria become pregnant?
Hello, I have been taking antihistamines for 5 years and have been diagnosed with urticaria.
I would like to know if it is suitable for me to become pregnant, and if I am already pregnant, will it have any effects? The medication name is Zyrtec (cetirizine hydrochloride).
Thank you.

Dr. Wu Huiling reply Pharmacology
Hello! In principle, before using Zyrtec (an antihistamine medication), please inform your physician if you have any heart, liver, or kidney dysfunction, are possibly or currently pregnant, are breastfeeding, or are taking other medications.
This medication is classified as Category B by the FDA in the United States, indicating that animal studies have not shown any teratogenic effects, but human studies have not been confirmed.
Nevertheless, the absence of teratogenic effects in animals cannot predict the teratogenic response in humans, so it is advisable to inform your doctor if you are planning to become pregnant.

More Info
When considering pregnancy while taking antihistamines such as cetirizine (commonly known by the brand name Zyrtec), it is essential to understand both the medication's safety profile and the potential implications for both the mother and the developing fetus.
Cetirizine is classified as a second-generation antihistamine, which means it is less likely to cause sedation compared to first-generation antihistamines. It is commonly used to treat allergic conditions, including urticaria (hives). The safety of cetirizine during pregnancy has been evaluated in several studies. Generally, cetirizine is considered to be relatively safe for use during pregnancy, particularly when compared to older antihistamines. The available data does not suggest a significant risk of major congenital malformations or adverse pregnancy outcomes associated with cetirizine use.
However, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider before making any decisions regarding medication use during pregnancy. If you are planning to conceive, it is advisable to discuss your current medication regimen with your doctor. They can help assess the necessity of continuing cetirizine and may suggest alternative treatments if needed. In many cases, the benefits of managing urticaria symptoms effectively can outweigh the potential risks associated with medication use.
If you are already pregnant and have been taking cetirizine, it is generally recommended to continue the medication if it is necessary for managing your symptoms. Abruptly stopping antihistamines without medical guidance can lead to increased discomfort and stress, which may not be beneficial for you or your baby. Your healthcare provider can help you weigh the risks and benefits based on your specific situation.
In terms of potential effects on the fetus, current evidence suggests that cetirizine does not significantly increase the risk of adverse outcomes. However, as with any medication, individual responses can vary, and it is essential to monitor for any unusual symptoms or side effects.
In addition to medication considerations, it is also important to focus on overall health and wellness when planning for pregnancy. This includes maintaining a balanced diet, managing stress, and ensuring regular prenatal care. If you have concerns about urticaria management during pregnancy, your healthcare provider may recommend non-pharmacological approaches, such as avoiding known triggers, using cool compresses, or implementing lifestyle changes that can help alleviate symptoms.
In summary, while cetirizine is generally considered safe during pregnancy, it is crucial to have open communication with your healthcare provider regarding your specific circumstances. They can provide personalized advice and support to ensure both your health and the health of your developing baby are prioritized.
