Growing taller?

My height is 183 cm and my weight is 75 kg.
I play basketball regularly every day.
Recently, I spoke with a doctor who is a relative of mine, and he mentioned that I might still grow taller.
I am wondering if I will continue to grow at my current height or if there are any methods to increase my height.
I hope to become a military police officer when I serve in the military.

Banzi, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/03/15

Dr. Hong Shouhong reply Family Medicine

The reason why a person can grow taller is that the long bones and vertebrae contain tissues capable of continuous division, allowing for bone growth, known as growth plates.
After reaching a certain age, these growth plates will close and stop dividing, thus determining a person's height.
Generally, the growth plates close around the ages of 16 to 18 for males and 14 to 16 for females.
Even with the administration of any growth hormones or height-increasing devices, it is impossible to achieve further height increase after the growth plates have closed.

The question of whether one can still grow taller, especially at the age of 18 and with a height of 183 cm, is a common concern among young adults. While it is generally accepted that most individuals experience their peak growth during puberty, there are nuances to consider regarding height growth and health.

First, it is essential to understand the biological basis of growth. Height is primarily determined by genetics, nutrition, and hormonal factors. The growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, located at the ends of long bones, are responsible for bone growth. In males, these plates typically close between the ages of 16 and 19, which means that significant height increases become less likely after this period. However, there are exceptions, and some individuals may experience slight increases in height even after the typical growth period due to various factors.

In your case, being 183 cm tall at 18 years old places you above the average height for males in many countries. The fact that you are actively playing basketball is beneficial, as physical activity can promote overall health and well-being. Exercise, particularly weight-bearing activities, can help maintain bone density and stimulate growth hormone production, which is crucial during the growth phase. However, since you are already 18, the likelihood of substantial height increases is low, especially if your growth plates have closed.

Regarding your inquiry about methods to potentially increase height, while there are no guaranteed ways to grow taller after the growth plates have closed, maintaining a healthy lifestyle can optimize your overall health. Here are some recommendations:
1. Nutrition: Ensure you are consuming a balanced diet rich in essential nutrients. Calcium and vitamin D are particularly important for bone health. Foods like dairy products, leafy greens, and fish can help meet these nutritional needs.

2. Sleep: Adequate sleep is crucial for growth and recovery. Growth hormone is primarily released during deep sleep, so aim for 7-9 hours of quality sleep each night.

3. Posture: Maintaining good posture can help you appear taller and prevent any spinal issues that may affect your height. Engage in exercises that strengthen your core and back muscles.

4. Hydration: Staying well-hydrated is essential for overall health and can help maintain the elasticity of your spinal discs, which may contribute to your height.

5. Consultation with a Specialist: If you have concerns about your growth or height, consider consulting with an endocrinologist or a specialist in sports medicine. They can provide personalized advice based on your health history and current growth status.

In conclusion, while the chances of significant height increases after the age of 18 are slim, focusing on a healthy lifestyle can help you maximize your potential. Remember that height is just one aspect of your overall identity, and many other factors contribute to your capabilities and self-worth. Embrace your height, continue to engage in activities you enjoy, and focus on your strengths and aspirations, such as your desire to serve as a military police officer.
