Body odor
Hello Dr.
Jiang, I have a concern that troubles me, which is that I have a scent on my body that others seem to dislike.
I do not smoke and shower every day, but I tend to sweat more than others after exercising.
I know I should use deodorant, but I really can't detect any unusual odor on myself! I am actually married with children, and I am unsure if this scent is related to that.
This has already affected my interpersonal relationships.
How can I change or resolve this? Thank you for your response, doctor!

Dr. Jiang Zheen reply Dermatology
I apologize for the delayed response.
First, it is important to determine the source of the odor.
Is it coming from the armpits or another area? If it is from the armpits, you can use some antiperspirants or topical antibiotics, and in some cases, surgical treatment may be considered.
However, if the odor is emanating from the entire body, it can be quite challenging to treat.
Wishing you well.

More Info
Dealing with unpleasant body odor can be a challenging issue, especially when it starts to affect your social interactions and relationships. It’s important to understand that body odor can be influenced by various factors, including genetics, diet, hygiene practices, and even underlying medical conditions. Here are some strategies and insights that may help you address this concern effectively.
Understanding Body Odor
1. Causes of Body Odor: Body odor primarily arises from the breakdown of sweat by bacteria on the skin. While everyone sweats, some individuals may have a stronger odor due to factors such as:
- Genetics: Some people naturally produce more odor-causing compounds.
- Diet: Foods like garlic, onions, and spices can contribute to body odor. Additionally, a diet high in red meat has been linked to stronger body odor.
- Medical Conditions: Certain conditions, such as diabetes, hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating), or metabolic disorders, can lead to unusual body odors. If you suspect this might be the case, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable.
2. Hygiene Practices: While you mentioned that you shower daily, consider the following tips to enhance your hygiene routine:
- Use Antibacterial Soap: This can help reduce the bacteria on your skin, which are responsible for odor.
- Dry Thoroughly: Make sure to dry your body completely after showering, especially in areas prone to sweating.
- Apply Antiperspirant: Antiperspirants work by blocking sweat glands, which can help reduce sweating and, consequently, odor. Consider using a clinical-strength formula if regular ones are ineffective.
Lifestyle Changes
1. Dietary Adjustments: Evaluate your diet and consider reducing foods that may contribute to body odor. Incorporating more fruits and vegetables can help, as they are less likely to cause odor compared to processed foods and meats.
2. Stay Hydrated: Drinking plenty of water can help dilute the substances in your sweat that cause odor. Hydration also supports overall health.
3. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Choose clothing made from natural fibers like cotton, which allow your skin to breathe and can help reduce sweating.
4. Regular Clothing Changes: Ensure that you change your clothes regularly, especially after exercising. This can help prevent the buildup of odor-causing bacteria.
Social Considerations
1. Open Communication: If you feel comfortable, consider discussing your concerns with close friends or family members. They may provide honest feedback and support.
2. Seek Professional Help: If the odor persists despite your efforts, it may be beneficial to consult a healthcare provider. They can help rule out any underlying medical conditions and may refer you to a dermatologist or an endocrinologist for further evaluation.
3. Mental Health Support: The stress and anxiety stemming from concerns about body odor can impact your mental health. If you find that this issue is leading to feelings of isolation or low self-esteem, consider speaking with a mental health professional. They can provide strategies to cope with social anxiety and improve your self-confidence.
Conclusion
Addressing body odor is not just about improving hygiene; it involves a holistic approach that includes lifestyle changes, open communication, and possibly medical intervention. Remember, you are not alone in this struggle, and many people face similar challenges. By taking proactive steps and seeking support, you can improve your situation and enhance your social interactions. Don't hesitate to reach out for help, whether from friends, family, or professionals, as they can provide valuable insights and encouragement on your journey to feeling more confident and comfortable in social settings.
