Pregnancy Weeks: When to Expect Heartbeat and Ultrasound - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Gestational age

Hello Doctor: I noticed some light blood traces when I went to the bathroom before bed on February 14.
On February 15, I realized my period had started.
I found out I was pregnant on March 31 after taking a pregnancy test.
My average menstrual cycle is 32 days, and my period lasts for 5 days.
I would like to know how many weeks pregnant I am currently.
At how many weeks does the fetus have a heartbeat? At what gestational age is an abdominal ultrasound typically performed? Thank you for your response!

A-Zhen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/04/02

Dr. Zhuang Zhijian reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

(1) The current gestational age should be determined as 6 weeks and a few days (calculated from the first day of the last menstrual period).
(2) Fetal heartbeat can typically be detected via abdominal ultrasound around 7 weeks.
(3) There are no restrictions on when to perform an ultrasound.

More Info

To calculate your current pregnancy week, we need to consider the date of your last menstrual period (LMP). You mentioned that you had light spotting on February 14 and then your period started on February 15. Assuming that February 15 is the first day of your last menstrual period, we can use this date to estimate your pregnancy week.

As of today, let's say it's October 1, 2023. From February 15 to October 1 is approximately 7.5 months or about 7 weeks and 2 days. Given that a typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, you would be around 7 weeks pregnant. However, since you have a 32-day cycle, this could slightly adjust your estimated due date and weeks of pregnancy.
Regarding fetal heartbeat, a heartbeat can typically be detected via ultrasound around 6 to 7 weeks of gestation. This is when the embryo is developed enough for the heart to start beating, and it can often be seen on a transvaginal ultrasound. By 8 weeks, the heartbeat is usually more pronounced and can be detected more easily on a standard abdominal ultrasound.

As for abdominal ultrasounds, they are generally performed around 8 to 12 weeks into the pregnancy. This is when the fetus is large enough for the ultrasound technician to get clear images and assess the development of the fetus. The abdominal ultrasound is also used to confirm the pregnancy and check for the presence of a heartbeat.

In summary:
1. Based on your LMP of February 15, you are approximately 7 weeks pregnant today.

2. A fetal heartbeat can typically be detected around 6 to 7 weeks of gestation.

3. An abdominal ultrasound is usually performed between 8 to 12 weeks of pregnancy.

If you have any further questions or concerns about your pregnancy, it is always best to consult with your healthcare provider for personalized advice and care. They can provide you with the most accurate information based on your specific situation and health history.
