Pubic hair acne..?

I would like to ask the doctor why I have hair in my pubic area that looks like acne.
It is extremely itchy and sometimes even bleeds and becomes infected.
This especially happens when I have my period, and it takes about one to two weeks after my period ends for it to go away, but the pimples reappear with my next period.

Xiao Shu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/04/07

Hello: You have folliculitis, which may have been triggered by wearing tighter pants or improper use of sanitary pads during your menstrual period, leading to a bacterial infection of the hair follicles.

Pimples in the pubic area can be a common concern, and there are several potential causes for this condition. Understanding these causes can help you find effective solutions and manage the symptoms.

Causes of Pimples in the Pubic Area
1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, often caused by bacteria, fungi, or irritation. It can occur in areas where hair is shaved or waxed, leading to red, itchy bumps that may resemble pimples. Folliculitis can become more pronounced during menstruation due to hormonal changes that may increase oil production and skin sensitivity.

2. Ingrown Hairs: When hair grows back into the skin instead of out of the follicle, it can cause painful bumps. This is particularly common in areas where hair is frequently shaved or waxed. Ingrown hairs can lead to inflammation and sometimes infection, resulting in pus-filled bumps.

3. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations, especially during menstruation, can lead to increased oil production in the skin, which can clog pores and lead to acne-like breakouts. This is similar to what many experience with facial acne during their menstrual cycle.

4. Skin Irritation: The pubic area is sensitive, and irritation from tight clothing, harsh soaps, or personal care products can lead to breakouts. This irritation can cause the skin to become inflamed and result in the formation of pimples.

5. Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs can cause lesions or bumps in the genital area. If you notice any unusual symptoms, such as sores, unusual discharge, or persistent pain, it is important to consult a healthcare provider for evaluation.

Solutions and Management
1. Maintain Hygiene: Keeping the area clean and dry is essential. Use mild, unscented soaps to avoid irritation. After washing, ensure the area is thoroughly dried, as moisture can exacerbate conditions like folliculitis.

2. Avoid Tight Clothing: Wearing loose-fitting underwear and clothing can help reduce friction and irritation in the pubic area. Cotton underwear is often recommended as it allows for better airflow.

3. Shaving and Hair Removal Techniques: If you shave or wax, consider using a clean, sharp razor and shaving in the direction of hair growth to minimize irritation. You might also explore alternative hair removal methods, such as trimming or laser hair removal, which can reduce the risk of ingrown hairs.

4. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter treatments containing benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid can help reduce inflammation and clear up pimples. However, be cautious when applying these products in sensitive areas, and consider consulting a healthcare provider for recommendations.

5. Consult a Dermatologist: If the pimples persist, become painful, or show signs of infection (such as pus or bleeding), it is crucial to seek medical advice. A dermatologist can provide a proper diagnosis and recommend treatments tailored to your specific condition.

6. Monitor for Other Symptoms: If you experience additional symptoms, such as fever, severe pain, or unusual discharge, seek medical attention promptly, as these could indicate a more serious condition.

Conclusion
Pimples in the pubic area can be uncomfortable and distressing, especially when they are itchy or painful. By understanding the potential causes and implementing appropriate hygiene and care practices, you can manage and reduce the occurrence of these breakouts. If symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to consult a healthcare professional for further evaluation and treatment. Taking proactive steps can help you maintain comfort and health in this sensitive area.
