Is left lower abdominal pain a gynecological issue?

I would like to ask Dr.
Zhao if the pain in my lower left abdomen is related to the fibroids that I was previously told about by the obstetrician-gynecologist.
I have seen three doctors, and the last one said that the ultrasound showed no issues.
However, I still occasionally experience abdominal pain, which is why I wanted to consult the doctor about whether that could be the cause.
I have also undergone treatment with Western medicine in the past.
I hope to receive a response from the doctor.
Thank you.

beth, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/04/11

Dr. Zhao Chengxiang reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello Beth, first of all, do you have uterine fibroids? Based on your description, it seems unlikely.
If you're still unsure, you may want to get checked at a larger hospital for confirmation.
Left lower abdominal pain could be related to issues with the intestines, bladder, ureters, or the uterus and ovaries.
If the pain persists, consider consulting with specialists in internal medicine, urology, or obstetrics and gynecology.
Additionally, making lifestyle changes—such as avoiding stress, not holding in urine, steering clear of cold foods, not overexerting yourself, and going to bed at a reasonable hour—can be very helpful for certain types of abdominal pain.

Left lower abdominal pain can indeed be related to gynecological issues, but it is essential to consider a variety of potential causes. Your concern about the relationship between your pain and the previously diagnosed uterine fibroids is valid, especially since fibroids can lead to discomfort or pain in some individuals. However, it is also crucial to note that not all fibroids cause symptoms, and the absence of abnormalities in ultrasound examinations suggests that your fibroids may not be the primary source of your pain.

Uterine fibroids, also known as leiomyomas, are benign tumors that can develop in the uterus. They can vary in size and location, and while many women with fibroids experience no symptoms, some may have heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pressure, or pain. If your ultrasound results were normal and did not indicate significant fibroid-related issues, it is possible that your left lower abdominal pain could be attributed to other factors.

Other gynecological conditions that could cause left lower abdominal pain include ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or pelvic inflammatory disease (PID). Ovarian cysts are fluid-filled sacs that can form on the ovaries and may cause pain, especially if they rupture. Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus, leading to pain, particularly during menstruation. PID is an infection of the reproductive organs that can cause significant discomfort and may require medical treatment.

Additionally, gastrointestinal issues such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), constipation, or diverticulitis can also manifest as left lower abdominal pain. Since you mentioned experiencing occasional abdominal pain, it may be worthwhile to consider whether dietary habits or bowel regularity could be contributing factors.
If you have previously undergone treatment with medications, it is essential to discuss any ongoing symptoms with your healthcare provider. They can help determine if your current treatment plan is appropriate or if further evaluation is necessary. It may also be beneficial to keep a symptom diary, noting when the pain occurs, its intensity, and any associated symptoms, as this information can aid your physician in diagnosing the underlying cause.

In summary, while left lower abdominal pain can be related to gynecological issues such as fibroids, it is essential to consider a broader range of potential causes. If your pain persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as changes in your menstrual cycle, heavy bleeding, or gastrointestinal disturbances, it is advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. They can provide a comprehensive assessment and recommend appropriate diagnostic tests or treatments based on your specific situation.
