Prolonged use of glasses has resulted in darkened skin on both sides of the nasal bridge?

Dear Dr.
Jin,
I have been wearing glasses for a long time, and due to commuting on a motorcycle, I need to wear a helmet.
The helmet is quite heavy, and wearing it with my glasses has caused pressure on the sides of my nose.
Initially, I experienced redness and swelling, but over time, two dark patches have developed that are difficult to cover with cosmetics, which is very distressing for me.
I am wondering if there are any treatments available to help eliminate these dark spots.
Additionally, I have been experiencing red bumps on my scalp due to a perm I had several years ago at a salon.
The stylist used an unknown chemical solution on my hair, which caused an unusual stinging sensation on my scalp.
For two weeks afterward, I experienced persistent scalp pain and hair loss.
Now, whenever I go to a salon for a wash or perm, the stylists inform me that red, raised rashes appear on my scalp.
I would like to know if there are any methods to treat this condition.
Thank you.

Hello, Miss:
1.
For the black spots on your nose, there are many creams available for spot removal.
You should be able to receive proper treatment at a dermatology clinic or hospital.
Sometimes, oral medications for spot reduction may also be prescribed.
If there is no improvement after using the medications for a period of time, you may consider further options such as laser treatment.
2.
Based on your description, the most likely scalp issue is seborrheic dermatitis.
This condition is related to individual constitution and may recur with stress or changes in weather.
Treatment will depend on your specific condition and may include:
a.
Medicated shampoos
b.
Topical medications or ointments
c.
Oral medications
d.
Avoiding late nights, managing stress, and steering clear of irritating foods and alcohol.

Of course, any other concerns should be addressed in person at a dermatology clinic to receive appropriate treatment.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Long-term use of eyewear, particularly in combination with the pressure from a helmet, can lead to skin issues such as dark spots and irritation around the nose. This is often due to friction, pressure, and possibly even allergic reactions to materials in the eyewear or helmet. The dark spots you are experiencing on either side of your nose are likely a result of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, which occurs after the skin has been irritated or inflamed.
To treat these dark spots, there are several options available:
1. Topical Treatments: Over-the-counter creams containing ingredients like hydroquinone, kojic acid, or vitamin C can help lighten hyperpigmented areas. Prescription-strength creams may also be available through a dermatologist. Additionally, retinoids can promote skin cell turnover and help fade dark spots over time.

2. Chemical Peels: A dermatologist can perform chemical peels that use acids to exfoliate the top layers of skin, which can help reduce the appearance of dark spots.

3. Laser Treatments: If topical treatments do not yield satisfactory results, laser therapy may be an option. Lasers can target pigmentation and promote collagen production, improving the overall texture and tone of the skin.

4. Sun Protection: It’s crucial to protect the affected areas from sun exposure, as UV rays can worsen pigmentation. Using a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 daily can prevent further darkening of the spots.

5. Consultation with a Dermatologist: Since the condition has persisted and is causing you distress, it would be wise to consult a dermatologist. They can provide a tailored treatment plan based on your specific skin type and the severity of the pigmentation.

Regarding the scalp irritation you mentioned, it sounds like you may be experiencing a form of contact dermatitis, which can occur due to exposure to irritants or allergens, particularly from hair treatments. Here are some steps you can take to manage and treat this condition:
1. Avoid Irritants: Identify and avoid any products that may be causing the irritation. This includes hair dyes, relaxers, or any styling products that contain harsh chemicals.

2. Soothing Treatments: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can help reduce inflammation and itching. Additionally, using gentle, fragrance-free shampoos can minimize irritation.

3. Consult a Dermatologist: If the irritation persists, it is advisable to see a dermatologist. They can assess your scalp condition and may prescribe stronger topical treatments or recommend allergy testing to identify specific triggers.

4. Scalp Care Routine: Implement a gentle scalp care routine that includes regular washing with a mild shampoo, avoiding excessive heat styling, and using a conditioner that is free from sulfates and parabens.

5. Patch Testing: Before undergoing any hair treatments in the future, consider performing a patch test with any new products to check for adverse reactions.

In summary, both the dark spots on your nose and the scalp irritation can be effectively managed with appropriate treatments and lifestyle adjustments. Consulting with healthcare professionals, such as dermatologists, will provide you with the best course of action tailored to your specific needs. Remember, patience is key, as many skin conditions take time to improve.
