Confusion
I am 37 years old, and two years ago, while taking a shower, I noticed that some of my pubic hair had turned white.
I found it strange and decided to shave it all off, hoping that the new hair would grow back healthy and black.
However, it still grew back white, and over the past two years, the amount has increased, which I find quite unappealing.
I'm hesitant to see a gynecologist and am unsure what the issue might be.
Could this be a sign of aging, similar to how white hair appears on the scalp? What should I do?

Dr. Shi Chengyang reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
It may be due to follicular aging; even if the hair is shaved off, it will still grow back as white hair.

More Info
At the age of 37, noticing white pubic hair is generally considered a normal part of the aging process. Just like the hair on your head, body hair can also undergo changes in pigmentation as you age. The appearance of white or gray hair is primarily due to a decrease in melanin production, the pigment responsible for hair color. This is a natural phenomenon that occurs in many individuals as they get older, and it can happen in various areas of the body, including pubic hair.
The fact that you have noticed a few white hairs two years ago and that they have increased in number is not uncommon. Hair follicles can start to lose their pigment over time, leading to the growth of white or gray hair. This process can be influenced by several factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, and overall health. If your family members have experienced similar changes, it may simply be a hereditary trait.
It's understandable to feel self-conscious about changes in your body, especially in areas that are typically private. However, it's important to remember that these changes are a normal part of life and do not necessarily indicate any underlying health issues. If the appearance of white pubic hair is causing you distress, you might consider discussing it with a healthcare professional. They can provide reassurance and help you understand that this is a common occurrence.
In terms of treatment, there is no medical necessity to address white pubic hair unless it is associated with other symptoms or concerns. If you are looking for cosmetic solutions, options such as hair dye are available, but they should be used with caution in sensitive areas. Always perform a patch test to check for any allergic reactions before applying any products.
If you have concerns about other changes in your body or if you notice any unusual symptoms, such as itching, irritation, or changes in skin texture, it would be wise to consult a healthcare provider. They can evaluate your symptoms and provide appropriate guidance. Regular check-ups with a gynecologist can also help you stay informed about your reproductive health and any changes that may occur as you age.
In summary, the presence of white pubic hair at 37 is typically a normal sign of aging and not a cause for concern. Embracing these changes as a natural part of life can help alleviate any anxiety you may feel. However, if you have any specific worries or if the changes are accompanied by other symptoms, seeking professional advice is always a good idea.
