Lubricants for sexual intercourse
Dear Dr.
Lin,
I previously used warming lubricants and found them painful and uncomfortable.
However, using petroleum jelly is not ideal for condoms as it may cause them to break.
I would like to know if there are any lubricants specifically designed for vaginal use? I have had infections in the past and want to use a safer and more suitable lubricant.
Thank you!

Dr. Lin Zhaopei reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
There are various types of lubricants available on the market.
If there is a history of infection, it may be advisable to use surgical lubricants, which have better antibacterial properties.
Our hospital offers a type of Surgilube, which is suitable for vaginal use.
It is available in tube packaging (120g) and single-use packets (3g).
Its full name is Surgilube, Surgical Lubricant Sterile Bacteriostatic.

When it comes to selecting safe and effective vaginal lubricants, especially for individuals who have experienced discomfort or infections in the past, it is crucial to consider both the ingredients and the intended use of the product. Many people may not realize that not all lubricants are created equal, and some can indeed cause irritation or even lead to infections.
First and foremost, it's important to avoid oil-based lubricants like petroleum jelly (Vaseline) when using latex condoms, as they can degrade the material and increase the risk of breakage. Instead, water-based or silicone-based lubricants are generally recommended for safe use with condoms. Water-based lubricants are easy to clean up, compatible with most condoms, and less likely to cause irritation. Some popular brands include Astroglide, K-Y Jelly, and Wet. Silicone-based lubricants, such as Pjur or Wet Platinum, offer longer-lasting lubrication and are also safe to use with condoms. They are particularly beneficial for individuals who may experience dryness or discomfort during intercourse.
For those who have a history of infections or sensitive skin, it is advisable to look for lubricants that are specifically labeled as hypoallergenic or free from common irritants such as glycerin, parabens, and fragrances. Glycerin, in particular, can promote yeast infections in some individuals, so opting for glycerin-free products can be a wise choice. Brands like Sliquid and Good Clean Love offer organic and natural options that are designed to be gentle on the body.
In addition to the type of lubricant, the pH balance is also an important factor to consider. The vagina has a natural pH level that is typically between 3.8 and 4.5. Using lubricants that are pH-balanced can help maintain the natural flora of the vagina and reduce the risk of infections. Some products are specifically formulated to mimic the natural pH of the vagina, making them a suitable choice for those who are prone to infections.
If you have experienced discomfort with warming lubricants in the past, it may be best to avoid those altogether, as they can cause irritation or an uncomfortable burning sensation. Instead, look for products that are labeled as "cooling" or "soothing," which may provide a more pleasant experience.
Lastly, it is always a good idea to consult with a healthcare provider or a gynecologist before trying new products, especially if you have a history of infections or sensitivities. They can provide personalized recommendations based on your specific health needs and concerns.
In summary, when searching for safe and effective vaginal lubricants, prioritize water-based or silicone-based options that are free from irritants and pH-balanced. Avoid oil-based products if you are using condoms, and consider consulting with a healthcare professional for tailored advice. By making informed choices, you can enhance comfort and protection during intimate activities while minimizing the risk of irritation or infection.
