Is it normal for a 25-year-old to not have facial hair or underarm hair?

Hello Doctor: I am a 25-year-old male, but so far I have not developed any underarm hair (only a few black hairs have grown).
My facial hair is also very sparse (almost unnoticeable), and I have little hair on my arms and legs.
Is this considered normal? Could it be due to abnormal secretion of male hormones or some other issue? Will this affect my fertility? Thank you very much for your help!

Andy, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2001/03/05

Dr. Li Huixiong reply Internal Medicine

For clarification on this issue, it is best to visit an endocrinologist for a face-to-face consultation with a physician.

It is not uncommon for some men to experience a lack of body and facial hair, even at the age of 25. The development of secondary sexual characteristics, such as body hair and facial hair, is largely influenced by hormonal levels, particularly testosterone. However, the degree of hair growth can vary significantly among individuals due to genetic factors, hormonal levels, and other physiological conditions.

In your case, the absence of significant body and facial hair does not necessarily indicate a medical problem. Some men may naturally have less body hair due to their genetic background. For instance, men of certain ethnicities may have less body and facial hair compared to others. Additionally, the presence of sparse hair growth does not automatically imply a deficiency in male hormones.
However, if you are concerned about your lack of hair growth, it may be worth considering a few factors. First, it is essential to evaluate your overall health and any accompanying symptoms. If you are experiencing other signs of hormonal imbalance, such as changes in libido, energy levels, or mood, it may warrant further investigation. Hormonal imbalances can sometimes be linked to conditions such as hypogonadism, which can affect testosterone levels and subsequently influence hair growth.

Regarding fertility, testosterone plays a crucial role in male reproductive health. Low testosterone levels can potentially impact sperm production and overall fertility. If you have concerns about your fertility, it would be advisable to consult with a healthcare professional who can conduct appropriate tests to assess your hormone levels and overall reproductive health.

In summary, while it is not unusual for some men to have minimal body and facial hair at 25, if you have concerns about hormonal imbalances or fertility, it is best to consult with a healthcare provider. They can perform the necessary evaluations, including blood tests to measure hormone levels, and provide guidance based on your specific situation. Remember, individual variations in hair growth are normal, and many factors contribute to these differences.
