Varicella vaccine

Is it necessary for children to receive the varicella vaccine? Previously, residents of Taichung City could receive the varicella vaccine for free, but now only children born after 2003 can receive it for free, correct? Do children born in 2002 have to pay out of pocket? Are there still any free vaccines available for administration? (I have a pair of twins.)

Kandi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/08/29

Dr. Zhang Peixin reply Pediatrics

Hello: 1.
Yes, it is best to get the varicella vaccine because the chance of contracting chickenpox is quite high.
Once infected, one may experience fever, develop blisters, and leave scars.
Do you understand? 2.
For babies born after 1992, the government provides the vaccine; other vaccinations depend on local government decisions.
3.
There are currently still vaccines available.
Sincerely, Dr.

In Taiwan, the chickenpox vaccine, also known as the varicella vaccine, is an important part of the immunization schedule for children. The vaccine is designed to protect against varicella, which is commonly known as chickenpox. Chickenpox is a highly contagious viral infection characterized by an itchy rash, fever, and fatigue. While most children recover without complications, the disease can lead to serious health issues, especially in infants, adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems.

As of the latest updates, the chickenpox vaccine is included in Taiwan's National Immunization Program (NIP) for children. However, there have been changes regarding eligibility for free vaccination. Children born in 1992 or later are eligible for free vaccination under the NIP. This means that if your twins were born in 1992 or later, they would qualify for the free chickenpox vaccine. However, if they were born in 1991 or earlier, you would need to pay for the vaccine out of pocket.

The chickenpox vaccine is typically administered in two doses. The first dose is usually given between 12 to 15 months of age, and the second dose is given between 4 to 6 years of age. This two-dose schedule is effective in providing long-lasting immunity against chickenpox. It is important to follow the recommended vaccination schedule to ensure that your children are adequately protected.

In addition to the free vaccination program, parents can also choose to have their children vaccinated at private clinics or hospitals, where the vaccine is available for purchase. If you are considering vaccination for your twins, it is advisable to consult with your pediatrician or healthcare provider. They can provide you with information on the availability of the vaccine, the costs involved, and any other questions you may have regarding the vaccination process.

Regarding the availability of free vaccinations, it is essential to stay updated with announcements from the Taiwan Centers for Disease Control (CDC) or local health authorities. They often provide information on vaccination campaigns, including any changes to eligibility or availability of free vaccines. You can also contact your local health department or clinic to inquire about the current status of free vaccinations for chickenpox and any other vaccines your children may need.

In summary, while the chickenpox vaccine is highly recommended for children, the eligibility for free vaccination in Taiwan depends on the year of birth. Children born in 1992 or later can receive the vaccine for free, while those born in 1991 or earlier will need to pay for it. It is crucial to follow the vaccination schedule and consult with healthcare providers for the best course of action for your twins. Staying informed about vaccination updates will help ensure that your children receive the necessary immunizations to protect their health.
