Cervical spine disorders
Hello Dr.
Huang: My condition is a cervical disc herniation that is compressing the nerves.
I sometimes experience soreness in the shoulder area of my left arm, and occasionally my fingers feel numb.
This situation has been ongoing for about 10 years.
Recently, after visiting a neurosurgery clinic and undergoing an MRI, the doctor informed me that there is severe nerve compression at the C4 and C5 vertebrae and recommended surgery as soon as possible.
Due to my fear of surgery, I would like to know what the efficacy of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is for cervical spine disorders.
What methods are used? What suggestions do you have regarding my situation?

Dr. Huang Zhongzhun reply Traditional Chinese Medicine
Hello, Pfhsieh:
If the cervical intervertebral disc herniation causes mild pain, numbness, or weakness, it is generally manageable with medication or rehabilitation.
Traditional Chinese medicine treats this condition with acupuncture and chiropractic adjustments.
However, if the compression is severe and affects daily activities and sleep, surgical intervention may need to be considered.
Since you mentioned occasional pain and numbness, it seems that the condition is not very severe.
Wishing you safety,
Dr.

When dealing with cervical disc issues, particularly those involving herniated discs that compress nerves, it's essential to consider a comprehensive approach to treatment. Your situation, characterized by symptoms such as shoulder and arm pain, as well as numbness in your fingers, is indeed concerning, especially given the long duration of these symptoms and the recent MRI findings indicating significant nerve compression at the C4-C5 levels.
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) offers various modalities that may help alleviate symptoms associated with cervical disc issues. These include acupuncture, herbal medicine, and tuina (Chinese therapeutic massage). Each of these methods aims to restore balance within the body, improve circulation, and reduce inflammation, which can be beneficial for nerve-related symptoms.
1. Acupuncture: This practice involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to stimulate the nervous system and promote healing. Research has shown that acupuncture can help relieve pain and improve function in patients with cervical radiculopathy (nerve pain radiating from the neck). It may also help reduce inflammation around the affected area, potentially alleviating pressure on the nerves.
2. Herbal Medicine: TCM utilizes various herbal formulas tailored to individual conditions. For cervical disc issues, herbs that promote blood circulation, reduce inflammation, and relieve pain may be used. Common herbs include Du Huo (Angelica pubescens) and Chuan Xiong (Ligusticum chuanxiong), which are known for their analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties. However, it's crucial to consult with a qualified TCM practitioner who can prescribe the appropriate formula based on your specific symptoms and constitution.
3. Tuina: This form of Chinese therapeutic massage focuses on manipulating the muscles and soft tissues to relieve tension and improve circulation. Tuina can be particularly effective in addressing musculoskeletal issues, including those related to the cervical spine. It may help alleviate muscle tightness around the neck and shoulders, which can contribute to nerve compression.
4. Lifestyle Modifications: In addition to TCM treatments, consider incorporating lifestyle changes that may help manage your symptoms. Ergonomic adjustments at your workstation, regular gentle stretching exercises, and maintaining good posture can all contribute to reducing strain on your cervical spine.
5. Consultation with a TCM Practitioner: Before pursuing TCM treatments, it's advisable to consult with a licensed TCM practitioner who can assess your condition holistically and develop a personalized treatment plan. They can also coordinate with your Western medical providers to ensure a comprehensive approach to your care.
While TCM can provide symptomatic relief and support healing, it's essential to weigh the benefits against the potential need for surgical intervention, especially given the severity of your nerve compression. If conservative treatments do not yield significant improvement, or if your symptoms worsen, it may be necessary to reconsider the surgical option recommended by your neurosurgeon.
In summary, TCM offers various approaches that may help manage your cervical disc issues, but it should be part of a broader treatment strategy that includes regular monitoring of your condition. Always communicate openly with your healthcare providers about your concerns and preferences to ensure that you receive the most appropriate care for your situation.
