Diarrhea is unusual?
Hello, doctor.
I originally had a habit of constipation, and my stools were hard.
However, a few days ago, I suddenly started experiencing intermittent abdominal pain without any urge to have a bowel movement until I went to the bathroom and strained, which resulted in some soft, mud-like stools.
For the past three days, I've only had a little bit of soft stool, and I had to strain to pass it.
On the third day, I suddenly had a small amount of watery diarrhea, but I don't feel the urge to go to the bathroom.
Can you please tell me what might be causing this? I had abdominal surgery for gynecological reasons in April, and I'm quite worried.

Dr. Chen Zhiping reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology
Hello, sometimes hard stools can become impacted in the rectum, leading to the passage of watery stools instead.
I recommend that you visit a hospital for an abdominal X-ray.
If necessary, the physician may also arrange for a colon examination.
Sincerely, Dr.

Sudden changes in bowel habits can be concerning, especially when they deviate significantly from your normal patterns. In your case, you mentioned a history of constipation with hard stools, followed by recent episodes of abdominal pain, difficulty in having bowel movements, and the passage of soft stools and watery diarrhea. These changes can be attributed to several factors, and it’s essential to understand the potential causes and implications.
Firstly, it’s important to recognize that bowel habits can be influenced by a variety of factors, including diet, stress, physical activity, and underlying medical conditions. Given your history of constipation, it’s possible that your gastrointestinal system is reacting to changes in your diet or lifestyle. For instance, if you have recently altered your eating habits, such as increasing fiber intake or consuming more fruits and vegetables, this could lead to changes in stool consistency and frequency. Additionally, stress and anxiety can significantly impact gut health, leading to symptoms like abdominal pain and altered bowel habits.
The abdominal pain you are experiencing could be a result of several factors, including gastrointestinal spasms, which can occur with conditions like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). IBS is characterized by a combination of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits, which can fluctuate between constipation and diarrhea. Given your history of anxiety and stress, it’s plausible that these factors are contributing to your current symptoms.
Moreover, your recent abdominal surgery may also play a role in your bowel changes. Post-operative changes can affect bowel motility and function, leading to temporary alterations in bowel habits. It’s not uncommon for individuals to experience changes in their gastrointestinal function following surgery, particularly if there was any manipulation of the intestines or if you were on medications that affect bowel motility, such as opioids for pain management.
The presence of watery diarrhea, especially if it is accompanied by abdominal pain, could indicate a few possibilities. It might suggest an infection, particularly if you have experienced any other symptoms such as fever or nausea. Alternatively, it could be a sign of a functional gastrointestinal disorder, where the gut is reacting to stress or dietary changes.
Given your concerns and the recent changes in your bowel habits, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend further evaluation, including stool tests to rule out infections or other gastrointestinal issues. Additionally, they may suggest dietary modifications, stress management techniques, or medications to help regulate your bowel function.
In summary, sudden changes in bowel habits can arise from various factors, including dietary changes, stress, and post-surgical effects. It’s crucial to monitor your symptoms and seek medical advice if they persist or worsen. Your healthcare provider can help determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment to restore your bowel health. Remember, maintaining a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and managing stress are essential components of gastrointestinal health.
