There is a strange sensation in the lower left abdomen?

I saw many symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome on the website that seem to match almost perfectly.
However, I also have a strange feeling in my lower left abdomen, like a bloating sensation, and when lying down, it feels somewhat pressurized, but it doesn't hurt.
This feeling started about three years ago, but it was very mild and infrequent, so I didn't pay much attention to it.
Recently, it has become almost constant.
Yesterday, when I was experiencing abdominal bloating, I tapped my lower left abdomen, and it produced a solid sound, while my lower right abdomen produced a hollow sound.
Could this be due to an abdominal tumor pressing on the intestines, or is there another reason? Please advise, thank you!

Mr. Lin, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2004/12/12

Hello, the percussion of the abdomen shows a solid mass, which indicates that it is filled with something.
It could be a tumor, or it might just be the intestines filled with contents.
However, tumors are usually associated with specific symptoms such as abdominal pain, abnormal bowel movements or changes in bowel habits, blood in the stool, and weight loss.
Additionally, family history is also very important, as the likelihood of tumors occurring in younger individuals is relatively low (though not impossible).
In uncertain situations, I recommend that you seek medical attention for further evaluation.
Sincerely, Dr.

Understanding unusual sensations in the left lower abdomen can be quite concerning, especially when they persist over time or change in intensity. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing a feeling of pressure or bloating in the left lower abdomen, which has become more frequent and noticeable over the past three years. You also mentioned that when you tap on your abdomen, the left side produces a solid sound while the right side sounds hollow. This could indicate a difference in the contents or structure of the abdominal cavity on either side.

There are several potential causes for the sensations you are experiencing. One possibility is related to gastrointestinal issues, such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), which you mentioned. IBS can manifest with symptoms like bloating, abdominal discomfort, and changes in bowel habits. It is characterized by a functional disturbance of the intestines, meaning that while the structure of the intestines appears normal, their function is altered. This can lead to sensations of pressure and bloating, particularly in the lower abdomen.

Another consideration is the presence of diverticular disease, which includes diverticulosis and diverticulitis. Diverticulosis occurs when small pouches (diverticula) form in the walls of the colon, often leading to no symptoms. However, if these pouches become inflamed or infected (diverticulitis), it can cause localized pain and discomfort. Given your history of diverticulosis, it would be prudent to monitor for any changes in symptoms, such as increased pain, fever, or changes in bowel habits.

Your description of the left side feeling "solid" when tapped could also suggest the presence of a mass or abnormal growth, such as a tumor. While it is less common, tumors can develop in the gastrointestinal tract or surrounding structures, leading to pressure symptoms. However, it is important to note that not all solid sounds indicate a tumor; it could also be due to gas or stool accumulation in the intestines.

Additionally, other potential causes could include hernias, which can create a bulge and lead to discomfort, or even gynecological issues if you are female, such as ovarian cysts or fibroids, which can cause pressure in the lower abdomen.

Given the complexity of abdominal symptoms and the potential for various underlying conditions, it is advisable to seek further evaluation from a healthcare professional. A thorough examination, including imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan, may be warranted to assess the structures in your abdomen and rule out any serious conditions. Blood tests may also be helpful to check for signs of infection or inflammation.

In summary, while your symptoms could be related to functional gastrointestinal disorders like IBS or diverticular disease, it is essential to consider other possibilities, including structural abnormalities. Consulting with a gastroenterologist or a primary care physician would be a prudent next step to ensure a comprehensive evaluation and appropriate management of your symptoms.
