Nipple darkening and pain?

A couple of days ago, I noticed some pain in my right nipple.
It feels swollen and painful when I press on it, but it doesn't retract.
Yesterday, I observed both nipples and found that the right nipple has become slightly darker and feels firm, and the areola is also larger.
I initially thought it was due to the cold weather causing nipple irritation during winter, but this issue is only occurring with the right nipple.
I'm feeling anxious and would like to know if there are any concerning symptoms and which specialty I should consult.
Thank you!

Hello: Please visit a general surgeon or a breast surgeon.
Based on your description, it is likely not cancer, but there is a possibility of inflammation.
There's no need to worry too much.
Wishing you good health.

The symptoms you are experiencing with your right nipple, including pain, swelling, darkening, and hardness, can be concerning and warrant further investigation. While I cannot provide a definitive diagnosis without a physical examination, I can offer some insights into potential causes and recommend the appropriate steps to take.

Firstly, the changes in your nipple could be due to a variety of benign conditions. One common cause of nipple pain and changes in appearance is nipple dermatitis, which can occur due to irritation, allergies, or infections. This condition can lead to symptoms such as redness, swelling, and discomfort. Another possibility is duct ectasia, where the milk ducts beneath the nipple become clogged, leading to pain and changes in the nipple's appearance.

In some cases, hormonal changes can also affect the breast tissue, leading to tenderness and changes in color. This is particularly common during menstrual cycles or hormonal fluctuations. However, since you mentioned that the changes are localized to one side, it is essential to consider other factors.

More serious conditions, such as Paget's disease of the nipple, can also present with similar symptoms. Paget's disease is a rare form of breast cancer that typically starts in the ducts of the nipple and can cause changes in the skin and appearance of the nipple. Symptoms may include itching, burning, and a discharge, along with the changes you have described.

Given the range of possibilities, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional for an accurate diagnosis. I recommend scheduling an appointment with a breast specialist or a dermatologist. They will be able to perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies like a mammogram or ultrasound, and may recommend a biopsy if there are any suspicious areas.

In the meantime, here are some general tips to manage discomfort:
1. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that clothing or personal care products may be irritating your skin, consider switching to softer fabrics and hypoallergenic products.

2. Warm Compresses: Applying a warm compress to the affected area may help alleviate some discomfort.

3. Monitor Changes: Keep track of any changes in size, shape, or color of the nipple and surrounding area, as well as any new symptoms that may arise.

It is understandable to feel anxious about these changes, but remember that many breast conditions are benign and treatable. Early evaluation and intervention are key to addressing any potential issues effectively. Please prioritize scheduling a visit with a healthcare provider to discuss your symptoms in detail.
