The male genitalia of a young boy?
Hello Dr.
Tu: I would like to ask you about an issue concerning the genitalia of an 8-year-old boy.
His penis is mostly erect but not in a state of erection (especially during bathing and in the morning when getting up or changing clothes).
I have noticed that other children his age have a flaccid penis while bathing and using the restroom.
Aside from this, the boy is otherwise normal like other children.
Is this normal?

When it comes to the development of boys during childhood and the onset of puberty, it is essential to understand the normal physiological changes that occur. In your question regarding an 8-year-old boy whose penis is often firm but not erect, it is important to clarify the distinction between a firm penis and an erection.
Firstly, it is normal for boys at this age to experience variations in the firmness of their penis. The penis can become firm due to various reasons, including arousal, temperature changes, or even just the natural state of the body. However, an erection, which is a more pronounced and sustained state of firmness typically associated with sexual arousal, is not the only indicator of puberty or sexual maturity.
At the age of 8, many boys are still in the prepubescent stage, and the physical signs of puberty, such as testicular enlargement and the growth of pubic hair, usually begin to appear between the ages of 9 and 14. The presence of a firm penis does not necessarily indicate that a boy is entering puberty; it can simply be a normal physiological response.
In your observation that other boys of the same age have a softer penis during similar situations, it is important to note that there is a wide range of normal when it comes to physical development in children. Each child's body develops at its own pace, and variations in physical responses are common.
If the boy is otherwise healthy, developing normally, and showing no signs of distress or discomfort, this pattern of firmness is likely within the range of normal behavior for his age. However, if there are concerns about his development, or if there are any unusual symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or significant changes in behavior, it would be advisable to consult a pediatrician or a specialist in pediatric urology.
In summary, the situation you described does not appear to be abnormal for an 8-year-old boy. The firmness of the penis without an erection is not uncommon and can be attributed to various non-sexual physiological factors. Monitoring his overall development and ensuring he is healthy is key. If there are any lingering concerns, seeking professional medical advice would provide reassurance and clarity.
