Questions about height?
I have a few questions to ask.
1.
It seems that my height measured in the morning is taller than in the evening.
If I am still taller in the morning, does that mean I might still grow taller?
2.
I heard that wearing canvas shoes can affect growth.
Is that true?
3.
I heard in the news that drinking too much milk is not good.
Does drinking milk help in growing taller?
Thank you! Dr.

Hello: Whether one will grow taller depends on whether the growth plates of the long bones in the lower limbs (femur and tibia/fibula) have fused, which can be assessed through X-ray imaging.
Drinking milk to supplement calcium can contribute to bone health, but it is not the sole factor in determining height.
There is no scientific evidence that wearing canvas shoes affects growth and development.
Sincerely, Dr.

When it comes to measuring height, many people notice a difference between their morning and evening measurements. This phenomenon is primarily due to the effects of gravity on the spine throughout the day. In the morning, after a night of rest, the intervertebral discs in the spine are fully hydrated and expanded, allowing for a taller measurement. As the day progresses and you engage in activities such as standing or sitting, gravity compresses these discs, leading to a slight decrease in height by the evening. For most individuals, this difference can range from 1 to 3 centimeters, depending on factors such as physical activity and posture throughout the day.
Regarding your first question about whether being taller in the morning indicates potential for further growth, it’s essential to understand that height is largely determined by genetics and the growth plates in your bones. The growth plates, or epiphyseal plates, are areas of developing cartilage tissue near the ends of long bones. Once these plates close, which typically occurs after puberty, further height increase is unlikely. If you are still in your growth phase, it is possible that you may grow taller, but measuring height at different times of the day does not directly correlate with growth potential.
Now, concerning the second question about wearing canvas shoes and their impact on growth, there is no scientific evidence supporting the idea that wearing specific types of footwear, including canvas shoes, affects growth or development. Footwear can influence comfort and posture, but it does not have a direct impact on bone growth or height. It is more important to wear shoes that provide adequate support and fit well, especially during periods of physical activity.
As for your third question regarding milk consumption and its effect on height, milk is a good source of calcium and vitamin D, both of which are essential for bone health. Adequate calcium intake during childhood and adolescence is crucial for developing strong bones and achieving maximum height potential. However, drinking excessive amounts of milk does not necessarily lead to increased height. Growth is influenced by a combination of factors, including genetics, nutrition, and overall health. While milk can contribute to a balanced diet, it should be consumed in moderation as part of a varied diet that includes other sources of nutrients.
In summary, measuring height in the morning versus the evening can show a difference due to spinal compression throughout the day. While being taller in the morning does not necessarily indicate future growth, it is essential to focus on overall health and nutrition during the growth years. Footwear does not significantly impact growth, and while milk can support bone health, it is just one part of a balanced diet. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including regular exercise and a nutritious diet, is key to supporting growth and overall well-being.
