Lump on the leg?
Hello! Over the past two days, I've been bitten by some unknown insects on my legs, resulting in five welts that are extremely itchy.
The welts are firm, with small blisters forming in the center, and the surrounding skin is very itchy.
They gradually turn into purplish-red welts and are difficult to heal! I'm not sure what to apply to them.
I couldn't help but pop the blisters, and it seems to have made the healing process even harder! What should I do?

If complications are not identified, the itching sensation will typically subside on its own after a few weeks.
The key is to avoid scratching.
If the itching becomes too bothersome, it's best to consult a dermatologist.

More Info
Dealing with itchy bumps on your legs can be quite uncomfortable, and it sounds like you're experiencing a reaction to insect bites, possibly from mosquitoes or other biting insects. The symptoms you describe—hard bumps with small blisters, intense itching, and a transition to a purplish-red color—are common signs of an allergic reaction or irritation from insect bites.
Causes
1. Insect Bites: The most likely cause of your symptoms is insect bites. When insects bite, they inject saliva into the skin, which can trigger an allergic reaction. This reaction often manifests as swelling, redness, and itching.
2. Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may have heightened sensitivity to insect bites, leading to more severe reactions. This can include the formation of blisters and prolonged itching.
3. Secondary Infection: If you have scratched the bumps, there is a risk of breaking the skin, which can lead to a secondary bacterial infection. This could cause the bumps to become more inflamed, red, and painful.
Treatments
1. Topical Treatments:
- Hydrocortisone Cream: Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream can help reduce inflammation and itching. Apply it directly to the affected areas as directed on the packaging.
- Antihistamines: Oral antihistamines like diphenhydramine (Benadryl) can help alleviate itching and reduce allergic reactions. Be cautious, as some antihistamines can cause drowsiness.
- Calamine Lotion: This can provide soothing relief for itchy skin and help dry out any blisters.
2. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the affected area can help reduce swelling and numb the itchiness. Use a clean cloth soaked in cold water or an ice pack wrapped in a towel.
3. Avoid Scratching: It’s crucial to avoid scratching the bumps, as this can lead to further irritation and potential infection. Keeping your nails trimmed and wearing loose clothing can help minimize the urge to scratch.
4. Keep the Area Clean: If the blisters have burst, gently clean the area with mild soap and water to prevent infection. You may want to apply an antibiotic ointment if there are open wounds.
5. Seek Medical Attention: If the bumps do not improve with home treatment, or if you notice signs of infection (increased redness, warmth, swelling, pus, or fever), it’s important to consult a healthcare provider. They may prescribe stronger topical steroids or antibiotics if necessary.
Prevention
- Insect Repellent: To prevent future bites, consider using insect repellent when outdoors, especially in areas where insects are prevalent.
- Protective Clothing: Wearing long sleeves and pants can help reduce exposure to biting insects.
- Avoiding Areas with High Insect Activity: Try to stay away from areas known for high insect activity, especially during peak times like dawn and dusk.
Conclusion
In summary, the itchy bumps on your legs are likely due to insect bites, and there are several effective treatments available. Over-the-counter medications, cold compresses, and good hygiene practices can help alleviate your symptoms. However, if your condition worsens or does not improve, seeking medical advice is essential. Remember to take preventive measures to avoid future bites, and take care of your skin to promote healing.
