GASCON 40 MG
I have kidney issues and high levels of protein in my urine.
Previously, I experienced abdominal bloating and consulted a Western medicine doctor.
I took a medication called GASCON 40 mg before bedtime, with a dosage of 1 packet for a total of 12 doses, taken four times a day after meals and before sleep for three days.
I informed the doctor about my kidney problems and high protein levels in my urine, but he said it was fine since it was a medication for bloating.
After taking one packet, I woke up the next day with swelling in my left eyelid.
I had previously experienced some edema in my legs, which had improved, but after taking that medication, the swelling became quite severe and difficult to control.
The medication has remained in my system, causing ongoing swelling.
It has been from December 29, 2023, to January 18, 2024.
I would like to know what kind of medication GASCON 40 mg is and how I can eliminate any remaining medication from my body.
Thank you! What should I eat?

Dr. Lin Meili reply Pharmacology
Hello: 1.
Gascon is a medication used to relieve gastrointestinal bloating; it works by disrupting the surface tension of gas bubbles in the intestines, thereby alleviating bloating.
2.
After entering the body, Gascon is not absorbed by the gastrointestinal tract and is excreted in its original form through feces within 24-48 hours after ingestion.
3.
You have been taking the medication since December 29, 1993, which is well over the recommended duration; unless you have not had a bowel movement, the medication would not still be in your system.
4.
The swelling in your body may be related to kidney function issues, and it is advisable to consult a nephrologist for further evaluation.
Self-medication with other drugs is not recommended.
Sincerely, Pharmacist Lin Mei-Li.

More Info
GASCON 40MG is primarily used to alleviate gastrointestinal discomfort, particularly bloating and gas. Its active ingredient, simethicone, works by reducing the surface tension of gas bubbles in the stomach and intestines, allowing them to combine and be expelled more easily. Importantly, simethicone is not absorbed into the bloodstream; it acts locally in the gastrointestinal tract and is excreted unchanged in the feces within 24 to 48 hours after ingestion. This means that if you have been taking GASCON as prescribed, it should not remain in your body for an extended period, especially if you are having regular bowel movements.
Given your history of kidney issues and high urinary protein levels, it is crucial to understand how medications can affect your condition. While GASCON is generally considered safe and does not have direct nephrotoxic effects, the swelling you are experiencing could be related to your underlying kidney function rather than the medication itself. Swelling, or edema, can occur when the kidneys are not effectively filtering fluids and waste products from the blood, leading to fluid retention.
The fact that you reported significant swelling after taking GASCON raises concerns about your kidney health. It is essential to consult with a nephrologist or your primary care physician to evaluate your kidney function and determine the cause of the edema. They may recommend tests such as blood tests to check your kidney function (e.g., serum creatinine, blood urea nitrogen) and urinalysis to assess protein levels in your urine.
In terms of managing your symptoms, it is vital to avoid self-medicating or taking additional medications without consulting your healthcare provider. They can provide guidance on dietary modifications that may help reduce swelling. For instance, a low-sodium diet can help manage fluid retention, and increasing your water intake may also assist in flushing out excess fluids.
If you are experiencing persistent swelling, it may be beneficial to monitor your fluid intake and output, and keep track of any other symptoms you may have. This information can be valuable for your healthcare provider in determining the best course of action.
In summary, while GASCON 40MG is not likely to be the direct cause of your swelling, it is essential to address your kidney health proactively. Regular follow-ups with your healthcare provider, adherence to prescribed treatments, and lifestyle modifications can help manage your condition effectively. Always communicate any new or worsening symptoms to your doctor, as they can provide the most appropriate care tailored to your specific health needs.
