Feeling uncomfortable after taking otolaryngology medication!

Hello, Pharmacist Liao: I visited the ENT department at Fengyuan Hospital, and the doctor prescribed me medication.
After taking one pill that night, I felt very energetic, and the itching and dryness in my eyes, which were caused by nasal congestion, were relieved.
However, I couldn't sleep until 3 AM, and the next day my eyes were very red.
I took a second pill in the morning, and besides the previously mentioned symptoms, I also felt very nauseous.
After that, I stopped taking the medication and only used a nasal spray.
Could you please let me know if the oral medication I took, Finska-LP (Roflumilast) extended-release film-coated tablets, has these side effects? Thank you!

Linda, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/01/22

Dr. Liao Huiling reply Pharmacology

Hello: The situation you mentioned is indeed a side effect of the medication.
If you are feeling very uncomfortable, you may stop taking the medication.
When you visit your doctor again, please ask them to prescribe a different medication.
Wishing you health and happiness!

More Info

When it comes to medications prescribed for ENT (ear, nose, and throat) conditions, it's essential to understand both their therapeutic effects and potential side effects. In your case, you mentioned taking a medication called Finska-LP, which is a combination of an antihistamine and a decongestant. This type of medication is commonly used to relieve symptoms associated with allergies, nasal congestion, and sinus pressure.

Therapeutic Effects
Finska-LP is designed to alleviate symptoms such as nasal congestion, itchy or watery eyes, and sinus discomfort. The antihistamine component works by blocking histamine receptors, which helps reduce allergic reactions, while the decongestant works to shrink swollen nasal passages, making it easier to breathe.

Side Effects
However, like all medications, Finska-LP can have side effects. The symptoms you experienced, such as insomnia, red eyes, and nausea, are not uncommon with antihistamines and decongestants. Here’s a breakdown of these side effects:
1. Insomnia: Some antihistamines can cause drowsiness, while others, especially those with stimulant properties, may lead to difficulty sleeping. This paradoxical reaction can occur, particularly in sensitive individuals or when the medication is taken later in the day.

2. Red Eyes: This can be a result of several factors, including dryness caused by the medication. Antihistamines can lead to decreased tear production, resulting in dry, red, and irritated eyes.

3. Nausea: Gastrointestinal upset, including nausea, is a known side effect of many medications, including antihistamines. This can occur due to the way the medication interacts with the central nervous system or affects the stomach lining.

Recommendations
Given your experience, it would be wise to consider the following:
- Consult Your Physician: Since you experienced significant discomfort, it’s crucial to discuss these side effects with your healthcare provider. They may recommend adjusting the dosage or switching to a different medication that may be better tolerated.

- Alternative Treatments: If Finska-LP is causing unwanted side effects, your doctor might suggest alternative treatments. For instance, nasal saline sprays or other non-drowsy antihistamines could be effective without the side effects you experienced.

- Hydration and Eye Care: To alleviate dry eyes, consider using artificial tears or lubricating eye drops. Staying well-hydrated can also help mitigate some gastrointestinal side effects.

- Timing of Medication: If you are prescribed medications that can cause drowsiness, taking them earlier in the evening might help prevent insomnia.

Conclusion
In summary, while medications like Finska-LP can effectively relieve symptoms associated with ENT conditions, they can also lead to side effects such as insomnia, red eyes, and nausea. It’s essential to communicate any adverse reactions to your healthcare provider, who can help tailor your treatment plan to minimize discomfort while effectively managing your symptoms. Always remember that individual responses to medications can vary significantly, and what works for one person may not work for another.
