Post-circumcision glans ecchymosis?

I had a circumcision four days ago, and today I suddenly noticed that the glans has a bruise and there is swelling in the foreskin with bruising as well.
Is this normal? What should I pay attention to? Thank you.

More Info

After undergoing a circumcision, it is not uncommon to experience some degree of bruising and swelling in the glans (the head of the penis) and the surrounding area. This is typically a result of the surgical procedure itself, which involves cutting and removing the foreskin, and can lead to localized trauma that manifests as bruising and swelling.

Normal Post-Operative Symptoms
1. Bruising: Bruising is a common occurrence after any surgical procedure, including circumcision. It happens due to small blood vessels being damaged during the surgery, leading to blood leaking into the surrounding tissues. This can appear as dark blue or purple discoloration on the glans and the shaft of the penis.

2. Swelling: Swelling is also a normal response to surgery. The body’s inflammatory response to the surgical trauma can cause fluid to accumulate in the tissues, resulting in swelling. This is usually temporary and should gradually decrease over the course of a few days to weeks.

3. Pain and Discomfort: Mild to moderate pain is expected after circumcision. This can usually be managed with over-the-counter pain relievers, as advised by your healthcare provider.

When to Seek Medical Attention
While some bruising and swelling are normal, there are certain signs that may indicate a complication, and you should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following:
- Severe Pain: If the pain becomes unbearable or does not improve with medication.

- Excessive Swelling: If the swelling continues to increase rather than decrease over time.

- Signs of Infection: These may include increased redness, warmth, discharge (especially if it is pus-like), or fever.

- Difficulty Urinating: If you experience pain or difficulty when trying to urinate, this could indicate a complication that needs to be addressed.

Care and Management
To aid in your recovery and manage symptoms, consider the following care tips:
1. Keep the Area Clean: Gently clean the area with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or scrubbing the area too vigorously.

2. Avoid Irritation: Wear loose-fitting underwear to minimize friction and irritation. Avoid activities that may put strain on the area, such as vigorous exercise or sexual activity, until you have fully healed.

3. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce swelling and provide relief from discomfort. Make sure to wrap ice or a cold pack in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.

4. Pain Management: Use over-the-counter pain relievers as recommended by your healthcare provider to manage pain and discomfort.

5. Follow-Up Appointments: Attend any scheduled follow-up appointments with your healthcare provider to ensure proper healing and address any concerns.

Conclusion
In summary, some bruising and swelling of the glans after circumcision is generally normal and part of the healing process. However, it is essential to monitor your symptoms and seek medical attention if you notice any concerning changes. Following proper care guidelines will help facilitate a smoother recovery. If you have any doubts or questions, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance.
