Scar
Hello Doctor, I would like to ask if scars on the genital area can be treated with steroid injections.
I had surgery last year, and even after a year, it still looks a bit swollen and feels somewhat hard.
I find it a bit unsightly.
Thank you for your help.

Dr. Lu Daokuan reply Plastic Surgery
If a scar is red, painful, and enlarging, it is meaningful to use corticosteroids.
The need for treatment should be determined based on the condition of the scar.

Steroid injections can indeed be used to treat scarring, including scars on the genitals. This treatment is particularly effective for hypertrophic scars and keloids, which are types of raised scars that can develop after surgery or injury. The primary mechanism by which steroids work in this context is by reducing inflammation and collagen production in the scar tissue, which can help flatten and soften the scar over time.
When a scar forms, it is essentially the body’s natural response to injury. However, in some cases, the healing process can lead to excessive collagen deposition, resulting in a raised scar. Steroid injections, such as triamcinolone acetonide, are commonly used to manage these types of scars. The injections are typically administered directly into the scar tissue, and the treatment may need to be repeated every few weeks to achieve the desired results.
In your case, since you mentioned that the scar appears swollen and feels hard to the touch a year after surgery, it is possible that you are dealing with a hypertrophic scar or keloid. These types of scars can be bothersome not only for cosmetic reasons but also because they can cause discomfort or itching. Steroid injections can help alleviate these symptoms and improve the appearance of the scar.
However, it is essential to consult with a healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist or a plastic surgeon, who can assess your specific situation. They will evaluate the scar's characteristics and determine whether steroid injections are appropriate for you. Additionally, they can discuss other treatment options that may be available, such as silicone gel sheets, laser therapy, or surgical revision, depending on the scar's nature and your personal preferences.
It's also important to consider potential side effects of steroid injections. While they are generally safe, some individuals may experience side effects such as skin thinning, discoloration, or temporary pain at the injection site. These risks should be weighed against the potential benefits, and your healthcare provider can help you make an informed decision.
In summary, steroid injections can be an effective treatment for scarring on the genitals, particularly for raised scars. It is crucial to have a thorough evaluation by a qualified healthcare professional to determine the best course of action for your specific situation. They will guide you through the treatment options and help you achieve the best possible outcome for your scar.
