Is the likelihood of preterm delivery high?
Dear Doctor: I am currently over 35 weeks pregnant, with a due date of April 10.
This is my first pregnancy.
In the past couple of days, I have noticed a "heavy" feeling in my abdomen, and the frequency of my uterus becoming hard has increased.
Additionally, I have started to feel soreness below the pubic bone (including the inner thighs), and I also feel a sense of pressure in the perineal area.
I have not experienced the typical constipation that many pregnant women have, but now I find that I have the urge to have a bowel movement shortly after eating a full meal.
Given these various symptoms, do they increase the likelihood of preterm labor? I am still riding my motorcycle to work, which takes about fifteen minutes, and I plan to start my maternity leave on the 21st.
Considering my current situation, would you recommend that I take my leave earlier? Thank you for taking the time to respond!

When it comes to the signs of early labor and the decision to take maternity leave, it's essential to understand the various symptoms and their implications. At 35 weeks pregnant, you are in the late third trimester, and while it is common to experience discomfort, some symptoms can indicate the possibility of early labor.
The symptoms you described, such as a feeling of heaviness in the abdomen ("墜墜的"), increased frequency of uterine tightening (often referred to as Braxton Hicks contractions), pelvic pain, and changes in bowel habits, can be concerning. While these symptoms can be normal in late pregnancy, they can also suggest that your body is preparing for labor. The sensation of your belly becoming hard frequently could indicate Braxton Hicks contractions, which are often referred to as "practice contractions." These are typically not a sign of labor but can become more pronounced as your body prepares for delivery.
However, the pelvic pain and the feeling of pressure in the perineum could be signs that your baby is engaging in the pelvis, which can sometimes precede labor. The increased urgency to have a bowel movement after eating could be related to the pressure the growing uterus places on your intestines and rectum, which is common in late pregnancy.
Regarding the likelihood of early labor, it is difficult to predict with certainty based solely on symptoms. Many women experience similar discomforts without going into labor prematurely. However, if you notice any additional signs such as regular contractions, fluid leakage, or significant changes in fetal movement, it would be prudent to contact your healthcare provider immediately.
As for your question about riding a motorcycle to work, it is generally advised that pregnant women avoid activities that could pose a risk to their safety and the safety of the baby, especially as they approach their due date. Riding a motorcycle can be risky due to the potential for falls or accidents, which could lead to injury. Given your current symptoms, it may be wise to consider taking maternity leave earlier than planned, especially if you are feeling uncomfortable or if your healthcare provider recommends it.
In summary, while your symptoms may not definitively indicate that early labor is imminent, they do warrant careful monitoring. It is always best to err on the side of caution. If you have any concerns about your symptoms or the safety of your current activities, I recommend discussing them with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation and help you make informed decisions regarding your maternity leave and overall well-being as you approach the final weeks of your pregnancy.
