Breast pain and tumors?
Hello Doctor: After the examination, I was confirmed to have four tumors.
The doctor said they are benign and advised me not to worry too much.
However, I am still quite young, and having tumors does make me a bit concerned.
My mother also has tumors, but I heard that breastfeeding is associated with a lower risk of developing tumors, right? Additionally, my mother has many tumors, about 7 or 8, and my nipples are inverted.
Is this abnormal? I have had this condition for as long as I can remember, but my mother says there is a problem.
In fact, my breasts sometimes experience pain, but I didn't think much of it.
Now that tumors have been detected, I can't help but make connections.
So I would like to ask, can benign tumors cause pain? I look forward to your response.
Thank you.
Xiao Ye, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/03/15

Understanding breast pain and benign tumors can be a complex issue, especially for young individuals like yourself who are navigating the emotional and physical implications of breast health. It’s understandable to feel concerned after being diagnosed with benign tumors, particularly when you have a family history of similar conditions.
Firstly, let’s clarify what benign tumors are. Benign tumors, such as fibroadenomas or cysts, are non-cancerous growths that can occur in the breast tissue. They are generally not harmful and do not spread to other parts of the body. Your doctor’s reassurance that these tumors are benign is a positive sign, but it’s natural to have lingering worries, especially given your age and family history.
Regarding your question about breastfeeding and the risk of developing tumors, research suggests that breastfeeding may indeed reduce the risk of certain types of breast tumors, including some benign conditions. This protective effect is thought to be related to hormonal changes that occur during lactation, which can influence breast tissue development. However, it’s important to note that having benign tumors does not necessarily correlate with your breastfeeding history or practices.
You mentioned that your mother has multiple tumors and that your nipple appears to be inverted. Inverted nipples can be a normal anatomical variation, but if this is a new development or accompanied by other symptoms, it’s worth discussing with your healthcare provider. Changes in the appearance of the breast or nipple can sometimes indicate underlying issues, so it’s always best to err on the side of caution.
As for breast pain, it is a common symptom experienced by many women and can be caused by a variety of factors, including hormonal fluctuations, cysts, or even benign tumors. While benign tumors can cause discomfort or pain, it’s essential to differentiate between normal cyclical breast pain related to your menstrual cycle and pain that may be associated with a specific lesion. If the pain is persistent, worsening, or affecting your quality of life, it would be prudent to consult your doctor for further evaluation.
In summary, while benign tumors can cause breast pain, it’s important to monitor your symptoms and maintain regular check-ups with your healthcare provider. If you experience any new symptoms, such as changes in breast shape, size, or persistent pain, don’t hesitate to seek medical advice. Regular screenings and open communication with your doctor will help ensure that any changes in your breast health are appropriately managed. Remember, being proactive about your health is key, and you are not alone in this journey.
