Red bumps on the glans?
Hello Dr.
Liu: Today at work, I felt some itching on my glans, but I didn't pay much attention to it.
When I got home and took a shower, I pulled back the foreskin and noticed a few small red spots (raised) on the upper right side of the glans, varying in size, all about 1mm.
Sometimes they itch, sometimes they don't.
There are also some red areas on the foreskin, while the left side of the glans appears normal.
I'm concerned about the possibility of a sexually transmitted infection, as I engaged in high-risk sexual behavior in early February.
I'm really worried and would appreciate your guidance.
Thank you!
Afu, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/03/17
Dr. Liu Jianting reply Urology
The issues with the glans are likely due to a fungal infection.
Since there has been a history of "high-risk sexual behavior," it is advisable to visit a hospital and consult a urologist for examination and treatment.

Red bumps on the glans can be concerning for many men, especially when accompanied by symptoms like itching. It's understandable to feel anxious about potential sexually transmitted infections (STIs) after engaging in risky sexual behavior. However, it's important to consider various possible causes for the symptoms you're experiencing.
Firstly, the red bumps on the glans could be due to a variety of non-infectious conditions. One common cause is irritation or inflammation, which can occur from friction, allergic reactions to soaps or detergents, or even from wearing tight clothing. Another possibility is a condition known as pearly penile papules, which are small, harmless bumps that can appear around the glans and are completely normal anatomical variations.
On the other hand, if the bumps are associated with other symptoms such as pain, discharge, or persistent itching, it could indicate an infection. Conditions such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans), candidiasis (yeast infection), or STIs like herpes or genital warts could present with similar symptoms. Given your history of risky sexual behavior, it is prudent to consider the possibility of an STI.
In terms of management, it is crucial to avoid self-diagnosing or self-treating. The best course of action is to consult a healthcare professional who can perform a thorough examination and possibly conduct tests to determine the exact cause of your symptoms. They may recommend a swab or urine test to check for infections, including STIs.
If it turns out to be an infection, treatment will depend on the specific diagnosis. For example, bacterial infections may require antibiotics, while fungal infections might be treated with antifungal medications. If it is an STI, appropriate treatment will be necessary to manage the condition and prevent transmission to partners.
In the meantime, to alleviate discomfort, consider keeping the area clean and dry, avoiding irritants, and wearing loose-fitting underwear. Over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may help reduce inflammation and itching, but it should be used sparingly and not as a substitute for professional medical advice.
In summary, while the presence of red bumps on the glans can be alarming, many potential causes exist, ranging from benign to more serious conditions. Given your recent sexual history, it is essential to seek medical evaluation to rule out any infections and receive appropriate treatment. Remember, early intervention can lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
