Regarding constipation..?

I have heard many celebrities say that drinking a small glass of red wine, white wine, or grape wine before bed can help with smooth bowel movements the next day.
Is this really effective? Also, when feeling hungry at night, people often say to eat fruit.
Is it true that eating a lot of fruit won't lead to weight gain? Do fruits contain carbohydrates?

Dr. Chen Zhiping reply Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Response: Hello, regarding the claim that drinking red wine aids in bowel movements, I personally have not heard of it and am unsure of its effectiveness.
Fruits also contain sugars, which are carbohydrates, but in lower amounts compared to high-calorie starchy foods like bread and instant noodles.
Fruits also provide fiber, vitamins, and other nutrients, so they should be consumed more frequently.
Sincerely, Dr.

More Info

Drinking wine before bed is often touted as a remedy for various ailments, including insomnia and even constipation. However, the relationship between alcohol consumption and digestive health is complex and not entirely straightforward. While some individuals may report that a small amount of wine helps them relax and subsequently aids in bowel movements, this is not a universally applicable solution and can carry risks.

Alcohol and Digestion
Alcohol, including wine, can have both positive and negative effects on the digestive system. On the one hand, moderate consumption of wine, particularly red wine, has been associated with certain health benefits due to its antioxidant properties, primarily from compounds like resveratrol. These antioxidants can promote cardiovascular health and may have a positive effect on gut health by supporting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

On the other hand, alcohol can also lead to dehydration, which is a common cause of constipation. Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production, which can lead to a loss of fluids and electrolytes. Dehydration can harden stool and make it more difficult to pass, exacerbating constipation rather than alleviating it. For individuals who are already prone to constipation, drinking wine before bed could potentially worsen their condition.

Individual Variability
It's important to note that the effects of alcohol can vary significantly from person to person. Some may find that a small glass of wine helps them relax and subsequently aids in digestion, while others may experience the opposite effect. Factors such as individual tolerance to alcohol, overall diet, hydration levels, and underlying health conditions all play a role in how alcohol affects digestion.

Alternatives for Constipation Relief
If you're looking for effective ways to relieve constipation, consider the following alternatives:
1. Hydration: Drinking plenty of water is crucial for maintaining healthy bowel movements. Aim for at least 8-10 glasses of water daily, especially if you consume alcohol.

2. Dietary Fiber: Incorporate high-fiber foods into your diet, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes. Fiber adds bulk to the stool and helps it pass more easily through the intestines.

3. Regular Exercise: Physical activity can stimulate digestion and promote regular bowel movements. Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise most days of the week.

4. Probiotics: Foods rich in probiotics, such as yogurt, kefir, and fermented vegetables, can support gut health and improve digestion.

5. Routine: Establishing a regular bathroom routine can help train your body to have consistent bowel movements.

Regarding Fruit Consumption
As for the question about fruit consumption, fruits do contain carbohydrates, primarily in the form of natural sugars and dietary fiber. While fruits are generally healthy and provide essential vitamins and minerals, consuming them in moderation is key. Eating excessive amounts of fruit can contribute to an increased caloric intake, which may lead to weight gain if not balanced with overall dietary habits and physical activity.

In conclusion, while some individuals may find that a small amount of wine before bed helps with relaxation and digestion, it is not a guaranteed remedy for constipation and can have adverse effects. It's essential to focus on a balanced diet, adequate hydration, and healthy lifestyle choices for optimal digestive health. If constipation persists, consulting a healthcare professional is advisable to rule out any underlying conditions and receive personalized recommendations.
