Red spots on the skin?

I developed some small red spots on my body two years ago.
In the past few months, they have grown larger and then slowly started to look like they are healing, but not quite.
The small red spots have never been itchy, and although they are spread throughout my body, they are more concentrated on my arms.
There are fewer on my legs and the front of my torso, while there are especially more on my back and buttocks, with none in the genital area.
I would appreciate Dr.
Huang's opinion.
Thank you.

More Info

Red spots on the skin can be a source of concern for many individuals, and understanding their causes and treatment options is crucial for effective management. Based on your description, it seems that you have been experiencing red spots for the past two years, which have recently grown larger but do not itch. The distribution of these spots, being more concentrated on your arms and less so on your legs and torso, can provide some clues about their nature.

There are several potential causes for red spots on the skin, and they can vary widely in terms of their underlying mechanisms. Here are some common conditions that could explain your symptoms:
1. Cherry Angiomas: These are benign growths of small blood vessels that appear as red or purple spots on the skin. They are common and usually harmless, often increasing in number with age.

2. Petechiae: These are tiny red or purple spots that occur when small blood vessels bleed into the skin. They can be caused by various factors, including physical trauma, certain medications, or underlying medical conditions.

3. Dermatitis: Various forms of dermatitis, such as contact dermatitis or atopic dermatitis, can cause red spots. These conditions are often associated with itching, but not always.

4. Pityriasis Rosea: This is a common skin condition that often starts with a single large spot followed by smaller spots. It typically resolves on its own within a few weeks to months.

5. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of hair follicles that can lead to red bumps or spots. It can be caused by infections, irritation, or blockage of the follicles.

6. Vascular Lesions: Conditions like hemangiomas or other vascular malformations can present as red spots and may require further evaluation.

Given that your spots have been persistent for two years and have changed in size, it is essential to consult a dermatologist for a thorough examination. A dermatologist can perform a physical examination, review your medical history, and possibly conduct a biopsy or other tests to determine the exact nature of the spots.

Treatment Options
The treatment for red spots on the skin will depend on the underlying cause. Here are some general approaches:
- Observation: If the spots are benign and not causing any symptoms, your doctor may recommend simply monitoring them over time.

- Topical Treatments: For conditions like dermatitis or folliculitis, topical corticosteroids or other anti-inflammatory creams may be prescribed to reduce inflammation and redness.

- Laser Therapy: For vascular lesions or cherry angiomas, laser treatments can effectively reduce or eliminate the appearance of red spots.

- Medications: If the spots are due to an underlying condition, such as an autoimmune disorder or infection, appropriate medications will be necessary.

- Lifestyle Modifications: Maintaining a healthy skin care routine, avoiding known irritants, and protecting your skin from excessive sun exposure can help manage and prevent further skin issues.

In conclusion, while red spots on the skin can be concerning, many are benign and manageable. It is crucial to seek professional medical advice for an accurate diagnosis and tailored treatment plan. Your dermatologist will be able to provide you with the best course of action based on a thorough evaluation of your skin condition.
