Doctor, please help me!
Hello Dr.
Hou: I previously mustered the courage to undergo surgery for hemorrhoids.
I originally had internal hemorrhoids, and on the day of the surgery, I experienced excruciating pain, feeling both surgical pain and swelling.
The nurse examined my wound and noticed a small lump protruding from my anus, but she didn't inform me at that time.
The next day, she told me it had reduced in size, but when I looked in the mirror, I saw that it had grown larger, and there were other small lumps as well, and it was very painful.
This is now the eighth day post-surgery, and the swelling has not subsided.
Is this normal, or could it indicate a failed surgery? Will I need to undergo another procedure? Can you please advise me? I am very worried.
(I have been using warm sitz baths and avoiding spicy foods.)

After hemorrhoid surgery, it is common to experience swelling and pain at the surgical site.
Generally, these symptoms will gradually improve after about 7 days.
Please discuss your condition and follow-up treatment with your surgeon.
If you do not receive a satisfactory response from your surgeon, please seek consultation from a nearby colorectal surgeon.

More Info
After undergoing hemorrhoid surgery, it is not uncommon to experience significant pain and discomfort, especially in the initial days following the procedure. The pain you described, particularly on the day of the surgery, is expected as the body reacts to the trauma of the operation. However, the presence of a small lump or growth at the surgical site can be concerning for many patients.
The lump you are observing could be a few different things. It might be a normal part of the healing process, such as a thrombosed hemorrhoid or a small skin tag that can occur after surgery. In some cases, it could also be a sign of a complication, such as a recurrence of hemorrhoids or an infection. It is essential to monitor the size and characteristics of this lump. If it continues to grow or becomes increasingly painful, it is crucial to consult your surgeon or healthcare provider for a thorough evaluation.
Regarding your concerns about whether this is normal or indicative of a surgical failure, it is important to understand that healing from hemorrhoid surgery can vary significantly from person to person. While some patients may experience a smooth recovery, others may have lingering symptoms or complications that require further intervention. The fact that you are on the eighth day post-surgery and still experiencing significant pain and the growth of new lumps suggests that you should seek medical advice.
In terms of pain management, it is advisable to continue using warm sitz baths, as they can help alleviate discomfort and promote healing. Over-the-counter pain medications, such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen, can also be beneficial in managing pain, but you should follow the dosage recommendations and consult your doctor if you have any concerns about their use.
If you are concerned about the possibility of needing another surgery, it is best to discuss this with your healthcare provider. They can assess your situation and determine whether further surgical intervention is necessary or if there are alternative treatments available. In some cases, additional procedures may be required to address complications or persistent symptoms.
In summary, while some pain and swelling are normal after hemorrhoid surgery, the growth of new lumps and persistent pain should be evaluated by your healthcare provider. It is essential to communicate openly with your doctor about your symptoms and concerns, as they can provide the best guidance tailored to your specific situation. Regular follow-ups and monitoring are crucial to ensure a successful recovery and to address any complications that may arise.
