Am I pregnant?

Hello Doctor: I would like to ask, my last menstrual period started on February 17, and my menstrual cycle typically ranges from 28 to 31 days.
By March, my period had not arrived, and I was quite worried.
I purchased a pregnancy test on March 27, which showed negative, and I did not experience any discomfort.
I had sexual intercourse on April 1, and I bought another pregnancy test on April 8, which also showed negative.
I have previously experienced delays in my period of about two weeks.
Doctor, am I pregnant?

Xiao Mi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/04/10

Dr. Dai Qihan reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, Xiaomi: Based on your description, it seems that you are not pregnant.
You can wait another 7-10 days, and if your period does not arrive, you can take another urine pregnancy test.

More Info

Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some anxiety regarding the possibility of pregnancy due to irregular menstrual cycles and the timing of your sexual activity. Let's break down your situation and provide some clarity.

You mentioned that your last menstrual period started on February 17, and your cycles typically range from 28 to 31 days. This means that your next expected period would have been around March 17 to March 20. Since you did not get your period in March, it is understandable that you began to worry about the possibility of being pregnant.

You took a pregnancy test on March 27, which came back negative, and you reported no symptoms of pregnancy at that time. Following that, you had sexual intercourse on April 1, and then took another pregnancy test on April 8, which also returned negative. Given that you have had two negative tests after your expected period, it is less likely that you are pregnant.

However, it is important to note that home pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken after a missed period, and they can sometimes yield false negatives, especially if taken too early. The hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), which is what these tests detect, may not be present in sufficient quantities to be detected right after conception. If you are still concerned about the possibility of pregnancy, consider waiting a few days and taking another test, or consult with a healthcare provider for a blood test, which can detect pregnancy earlier and more accurately than home tests.

Regarding your irregular periods, it is not uncommon for women to experience variations in their menstrual cycles due to a variety of factors, including stress, hormonal imbalances, changes in weight, or underlying health conditions. If you have a history of delayed periods, this could be a normal variation for you. However, if this pattern continues or if you experience other symptoms such as significant pain, heavy bleeding, or other unusual changes, it would be wise to consult with a healthcare professional.

In summary, based on the information you provided, it seems unlikely that you are pregnant given the negative test results and the timing of your menstrual cycle. However, if you continue to have concerns or if your period does not arrive soon, I recommend reaching out to a healthcare provider for further evaluation and peace of mind. They can help assess your menstrual health and provide guidance on any necessary next steps.
