Bleeding during first sexual experience?
Hello, doctor: I had sexual intercourse with my girlfriend yesterday.
She mentioned that she was still a virgin, but there was no bleeding afterward, and she only felt abdominal discomfort (which I assume is normal due to the use of vaginal muscles for the first time).
However, I am concerned because she started bleeding today (the amount is similar to the first day of her menstrual period, but her last period was ten days ago).
She feels very anxious, and I am at a loss: why was there no bleeding during intercourse, but she started bleeding today? I would like to ask the doctor if this is normal.
Will the bleeding stop within a day or two, or should we go to the hospital for an examination immediately? What could be the possible symptoms? I appreciate your guidance and help! Wishing you all the best!

Hello: Based on your description, it is most likely that the bleeding is caused by a hymenal or vaginal tear.
Please seek medical attention promptly at Hsinchu City Hospital, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

Experiencing bleeding after a first sexual encounter can be concerning, especially for both partners involved. It’s important to understand the possible causes and when to seek medical attention.
Firstly, it’s common for individuals who are engaging in sexual activity for the first time to experience some degree of bleeding. This bleeding can often be attributed to the tearing of the hymen, which is a thin membrane that partially covers the vaginal opening. In many cases, this tearing is minor and results in only a small amount of blood, which may appear bright red. However, the hymen is not the only factor; the vaginal walls can also be sensitive and may experience minor injuries during penetration, especially if there is insufficient lubrication or if the activity is more vigorous than the body is accustomed to.
In your situation, the fact that your girlfriend did not bleed immediately after the encounter but started bleeding the following day can be explained by a few factors. It’s possible that the initial activity caused some minor trauma that did not result in immediate bleeding but led to delayed bleeding as the body responded to the injury. The abdominal discomfort she is experiencing could also be related to muscle strain from the new physical activity or the emotional stress associated with the experience.
Regarding the amount of bleeding, if it resembles the first day of her menstrual period, it could be concerning, especially since her last period was ten days prior. This could indicate that the bleeding is not related to her menstrual cycle but rather to the physical activity. The color of the blood can also provide clues; bright red blood typically indicates fresh bleeding, while darker blood may suggest older blood, possibly from a previous injury or menstrual remnants.
As for the duration of the bleeding, if it persists beyond a few days or if it increases in volume, it is advisable to seek medical attention. Continuous bleeding, especially if accompanied by severe pain, fever, or any other unusual symptoms, warrants a visit to a healthcare provider. A gynecological examination can help determine the cause of the bleeding and rule out any serious conditions, such as infections or more significant injuries.
In summary, while some bleeding after a first sexual experience can be normal, especially if there is a history of hymenal tearing or vaginal trauma, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If the bleeding continues or worsens, or if there are any other concerning symptoms, it is best to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Open communication with your partner about her feelings and any physical symptoms she is experiencing is also crucial in navigating this new experience together.
