Does the skin medication contain steroids?

Does the medication Zyrtec (cetirizine hydrochloride 10mg) contain steroids and what are its side effects? I have hypothyroidism and take Eltroxin 100mcg once daily, so I have concerns about my body's metabolism and whether taking this medication for an extended period could be harmful.

Lai Xiaoxiao, 30~39 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/05/11

Dr. Hou Fangmin reply Pharmacology

Hello; Zyrtec is an H1 receptor antagonist that rapidly inhibits both endogenous and exogenous histamine, reducing the excessive response to histamine in asthma patients and alleviating hypersensitivity reactions caused by specific allergens.
At effective doses, this medication does not cross the blood-brain barrier, thus having no central nervous system effects, and it does not cause sedation or behavioral abnormalities.
Indications include allergic rhinitis, seasonal rhinitis, conjunctivitis, urticaria, and allergic pruritus.

Side effects may include drowsiness in some individuals, as well as other effects such as headache, dizziness, excitability, dry mouth, and gastrointestinal discomfort.

Precautions: 1.
Use with caution in individuals taking sedatives.
2.
Normal individuals taking a daily dose of 20-25 mg do not experience adverse effects on normal sleep and activities; however, caution is advised when driving or operating machinery.
3.
At therapeutic doses, this medication does not enhance the effects of alcohol, but concurrent use should still be avoided.

Additionally, the use of Eltroxin may increase the effects of anticoagulants, so caution is advised when using anticoagulants, as well as with antiepileptic medications.
Thank you for your question, and I wish you peace and happiness.

More Info

Zyrtec, which contains cetirizine hydrochloride, is an antihistamine commonly used to relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy or watery eyes. Importantly, Zyrtec does not contain steroids. It belongs to a class of medications known as second-generation antihistamines, which are designed to minimize sedation and other side effects compared to first-generation antihistamines.

Understanding Zyrtec and Its Effects
1. Mechanism of Action: Cetirizine works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance in the body that causes allergic symptoms. By inhibiting histamine's effects, Zyrtec helps alleviate symptoms associated with allergies and hay fever.

2. Safety Profile: Zyrtec is generally considered safe for long-term use. Studies have shown that it can be used for extended periods without significant adverse effects in most individuals. However, as with any medication, some people may experience side effects. Common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, dry mouth, and dizziness. These effects are usually mild and may diminish with continued use.

3. Long-term Use Considerations: For individuals with chronic conditions, such as hypothyroidism (as in your case), it is essential to monitor how your body responds to any medication. While Zyrtec is not known to interfere with thyroid medications like Eltroxin (levothyroxine), it is always prudent to consult with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns about long-term medication use, especially if you have underlying health conditions.

4. Interactions with Other Medications: Zyrtec does not have significant interactions with levothyroxine. However, it is crucial to inform your doctor about all medications you are taking, including over-the-counter drugs and supplements, to avoid potential interactions.

5. Potential Side Effects: While Zyrtec is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects such as:
- Drowsiness: Although Zyrtec is less sedating than first-generation antihistamines, it can still cause drowsiness in some people. It is advisable to avoid activities that require full alertness, such as driving, until you know how the medication affects you.

- Gastrointestinal Issues: Some users report mild gastrointestinal disturbances, such as nausea or diarrhea.

- Dry Mouth: This is a common side effect of many antihistamines, including Zyrtec.

Conclusion
In summary, Zyrtec (cetirizine hydrochloride) does not contain steroids and is generally safe for long-term use, even for individuals with hypothyroidism. However, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider regarding any concerns about your medications. Regular monitoring of your health and any side effects you may experience is crucial to ensure that your treatment remains effective and safe. If you have any specific concerns about how Zyrtec may affect your condition or interact with your other medications, please consult your physician for personalized advice.
