Right abdominal discomfort?
Hello doctor, sometimes I feel a dull pain in my right abdomen, but I'm not quite sure about the exact location when I press it with my fingers.
This symptom seems to occur during the second half of my menstrual cycle, so I'm unsure whether it's related to my ovaries or liver.
About six or seven years ago, I noticed a yellow spot appearing on the white part of my left eye.
Should I get this checked?

More Info
Right abdominal pain can be a perplexing symptom, especially when it occurs intermittently and is associated with other factors such as the menstrual cycle. Understanding the potential causes of right abdominal pain is crucial for determining whether medical evaluation is necessary.
Possible Causes of Right Abdominal Pain
1. Gynecological Issues: Given that your pain coincides with your menstrual cycle, one of the most common causes could be related to the ovaries or uterus. Conditions such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or even pelvic inflammatory disease can cause pain in the right lower abdomen. If the pain is severe, it could indicate a ruptured cyst or ectopic pregnancy, which requires immediate medical attention.
2. Gastrointestinal Problems: The right side of the abdomen houses several organs, including the appendix, parts of the intestines, and the liver. Appendicitis is a classic cause of right-sided abdominal pain, often accompanied by fever and nausea. Other gastrointestinal issues such as gallstones, liver disease, or inflammatory bowel disease could also manifest as pain in this area.
3. Musculoskeletal Pain: Sometimes, pain in the abdomen can be referred from the back or ribs. Muscular strain or injuries can cause discomfort that might be perceived as abdominal pain.
4. Hepatic Concerns: The yellow spot in the sclera of your left eye could indicate jaundice, which is often associated with liver dysfunction. Liver conditions, including hepatitis or fatty liver disease, can cause referred pain to the right upper quadrant of the abdomen.
When to Seek Help
Given the complexity of abdominal pain and its potential causes, it is advisable to seek medical attention if:
- The pain is severe or persistent.
- You experience additional symptoms such as fever, vomiting, changes in bowel habits, or jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes).
- The pain disrupts your daily activities or sleep.
- You have a history of gynecological issues or liver disease.
Recommended Actions
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It would be prudent to schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider who can perform a thorough evaluation. This may include a physical examination, blood tests, and imaging studies such as an ultrasound or CT scan to assess the organs in the abdominal cavity.
2. Gynecological Evaluation: Given the timing of your symptoms with your menstrual cycle, a visit to a gynecologist may be particularly beneficial. They can conduct tests to rule out ovarian issues or other reproductive health concerns.
3. Liver Function Tests: Since you mentioned the yellow spot in your eye, it would be wise to have liver function tests performed. This can help determine if there are any underlying liver issues that need to be addressed.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep a diary of your symptoms, noting when they occur, their intensity, and any accompanying symptoms. This information can be invaluable for your healthcare provider in diagnosing the issue.
Conclusion
In summary, right abdominal pain can stem from various causes, including gynecological, gastrointestinal, and musculoskeletal issues. Given your symptoms and their timing with your menstrual cycle, it is essential to seek medical evaluation to determine the underlying cause. Early diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve outcomes and alleviate discomfort. Don't hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional to discuss your symptoms and concerns.
