Color Blindness: Can Special Glasses Help in Taiwan? - Ophthalmology

Color blindness issues

I would like to ask about a potential color vision deficiency issue I seem to have.
I saw online that there are glasses available in the United States that can correct color blindness and color vision deficiencies, allowing users to regain their color perception immediately upon wearing them.
Are these types of glasses available in Taiwan? Can everyone wear these glasses, or do individuals need to undergo an examination at an optical store to determine which type of glasses would be suitable based on the colors they find confusing? I find my situation quite peculiar because, generally speaking, I don't have much trouble distinguishing a single color.
However, when it comes to color vision tests, like the Ishihara plates, I sometimes struggle to see the numbers.
Of course, there are some numbers I can see and others I cannot.
Does this indicate a serious condition?

Color blindness, or color vision deficiency, is a condition that affects a person's ability to perceive colors accurately. It is often inherited and can range from mild to severe. In your case, it sounds like you may have a form of color weakness, which is a less severe type of color blindness. Many people with color vision deficiencies can still see colors but may have difficulty distinguishing between certain shades, particularly in specific contexts, such as when looking at color plates used in vision tests.

Regarding your question about special glasses designed to help individuals with color blindness, there are indeed products available, such as EnChroma glasses, which claim to enhance color perception for those with certain types of color vision deficiencies. These glasses work by filtering specific wavelengths of light to improve the contrast between colors that may appear similar to someone with color blindness. However, the effectiveness of these glasses can vary from person to person, depending on the type and severity of their color vision deficiency.

As for availability in Taiwan, while specific brands like EnChroma may not be widely available, there are other options that might be accessible. It is advisable to check with local optical shops or eye care professionals to see if they carry similar products or can order them for you. Additionally, it is important to have a proper eye examination to determine the specific nature of your color vision deficiency. An eye care professional can provide guidance on whether these glasses would be suitable for you and which type might work best based on your specific needs.

When it comes to wearing these glasses, they are generally designed for individuals with color blindness, but not everyone will experience the same level of improvement. Some people may find that they help significantly, while others may notice little to no difference. It is also worth noting that these glasses are not a cure for color blindness; they are more of an aid to enhance color perception.

In your case, since you mentioned that you can see some colors clearly but struggle with specific tests, it may indicate a mild form of color vision deficiency. This is not uncommon, and many individuals lead normal lives without significant issues. However, if you are considering pursuing a career in fields that require accurate color perception, such as art or design, it may be beneficial to explore these glasses further.

In summary, while special glasses for color blindness may be available in Taiwan, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional to assess your specific condition and determine the best course of action. They can help you understand your color vision deficiency better and guide you on whether these glasses could be a helpful tool for you.
