Abnormal vaginal bleeding?
I usually have a regular menstrual cycle, but after my period ended this month, I experienced light vaginal bleeding for about a week.
On the sixth day of the bleeding, I visited a gynecologist.
After a routine examination, the doctor said I had increased discharge and diagnosed me with "vaginitis," taking a small sample for testing to check for any bacteria.
I would like to know why the doctor did not prescribe any anti-inflammatory medication, especially since I am still experiencing light bleeding.
Should I see a doctor again? Am I truly experiencing what the doctor referred to as "vaginitis"?

Hello: This physician should wait for the test results before prescribing medication.
They are truly a good doctor who does not casually prescribe antibiotics.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding can be a concerning symptom for many women, especially when it occurs outside of the regular menstrual cycle. Your situation, where you experienced light bleeding about a week after your period ended, is not uncommon and can arise from various causes.
Firstly, it’s important to understand that abnormal vaginal bleeding can stem from numerous factors, including hormonal imbalances, infections, structural abnormalities (like polyps or fibroids), and even stress. In your case, the doctor diagnosed you with vaginitis, which is an inflammation of the vagina that can result from infections, irritants, or hormonal changes. The fact that the doctor took a sample for testing indicates that they are looking to identify any underlying infections, such as bacterial vaginosis or a yeast infection, which are common causes of vaginitis.
Regarding your question about why the doctor did not prescribe anti-inflammatory medication, it’s possible that the doctor wanted to confirm the diagnosis through lab results before initiating treatment. In many cases, treating the underlying cause of the inflammation is more effective than simply addressing the symptoms. If the tests reveal an infection, appropriate antibiotics or antifungal medications can be prescribed based on the specific pathogen identified.
As for the continued light bleeding, it’s essential to monitor the situation. If the bleeding persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as pain, fever, or unusual discharge, it would be prudent to follow up with your healthcare provider. Persistent bleeding could indicate other issues, such as hormonal imbalances or other gynecological conditions that may require further evaluation.
In terms of whether you should see a doctor again, it depends on how you feel and the progression of your symptoms. If the bleeding continues for more than a few days without improvement, or if you have concerns about the diagnosis of vaginitis, seeking a second opinion or returning to your healthcare provider is advisable. It’s crucial to advocate for your health and ensure that any ongoing symptoms are thoroughly investigated.
In summary, while your symptoms may suggest vaginitis, it’s essential to await the results of the tests conducted by your doctor. If the bleeding continues or if you have any new or worsening symptoms, do not hesitate to seek further medical advice. Remember, your health is paramount, and understanding the underlying causes of your symptoms is key to effective treatment.
