Issues that occur during sexual intercourse?

During intercourse with my girlfriend in a rear-entry position, I noticed that after penetrating about halfway or a bit more, it feels like the glans is hitting something hard, making it difficult to fully penetrate.
This issue wasn't present a week or two ago, and it seems to disappear when using a normal position.
What could be the problem? Is it related to the position? Thank you, doctor.

Le Zhi, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2005/06/08

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

The response may be related to the angle of the vagina.
Most people have an anteverted uterus, and in the normal position, the angle of the vagina aligns with the angle of the erect penis.
However, in a rear-entry position, the angle of the vagina is opposite to that of the erect penis, which can create resistance and a feeling of pressure.
Sincerely, Lu Lizheng.

When it comes to sexual discomfort during intercourse, particularly in positions like doggie style, there are several factors that could contribute to the sensations you're experiencing. It's important to approach this topic with sensitivity and an understanding of both anatomical and psychological aspects.

Firstly, the sensation of hitting a "hard" area during penetration could be due to a few anatomical reasons. In the doggie style position, the angle of penetration changes significantly compared to more traditional positions. This can sometimes lead to the penis making contact with the cervix, which can feel uncomfortable or even painful for some women. The cervix is the lower part of the uterus that opens into the vagina, and during deep penetration, especially in certain positions, it can be pressed against, leading to discomfort.

Another possibility is that your partner may have a condition known as vaginismus, which is an involuntary contraction of the pelvic floor muscles that can make penetration painful or difficult. This condition can be psychological, stemming from anxiety or fear related to sexual activity, or it can be physical, related to muscle tension. If your partner experiences discomfort or pain during penetration, it may be worth discussing this with her and considering seeking advice from a healthcare professional.

Additionally, the presence of any anatomical variations, such as a tilted uterus or fibroids, can also affect how penetration feels. If your partner has any underlying medical conditions that could be contributing to this sensation, it would be advisable for her to consult with a gynecologist.

It's also essential to consider the importance of communication in sexual relationships. Discussing what feels good and what doesn't can help both partners understand each other's bodies better and find positions that are comfortable and pleasurable for both. If doggie style is causing discomfort, you might want to explore other positions that allow for shallower penetration or provide a different angle, which may alleviate the issue.

Lastly, lubrication can play a significant role in comfort during intercourse. If there is any dryness, it can lead to friction and discomfort. Using a water-based lubricant can help ease penetration and make the experience more enjoyable for both partners.

In conclusion, the discomfort you're experiencing during doggie style could be due to anatomical factors, psychological aspects, or a combination of both. Open communication with your partner, exploring different positions, and considering the use of lubrication can help improve your sexual experience. If the discomfort persists, it may be beneficial for your partner to consult with a healthcare professional to rule out any underlying medical issues. Remember, sexual health is an important aspect of overall well-being, and seeking help is a positive step towards a fulfilling sexual relationship.
