Is It Normal? Concerns About Breast Development and Pain - Breast and Thyroid

Is this considered normal?

Hello, Dr.
Yang: I would like to ask about my breasts.
They are quite large, but since I was young, my nipples have not been very prominent, and sometimes they are almost nonexistent, even with my breasts being parallel.
Even when I wear very thin clothing, they are not noticeable; only when it's colder do I feel a slight protrusion when I touch them.
My friends said that it should improve as I grow older, but now that I am 18 and have had sexual experiences, there has been no change.
Is this normal?
Also, a few days ago, I suddenly experienced severe pain in my right breast, which was unusually intense; even lightly touching it caused pain.
At that time, I did not feel any lumps, but I noticed that the fatty tissue seemed more swollen than the left side.
However, after a day, when I touched it again, I found a noticeable lump in the lower left area, and it is quite large.
I am very worried and would like to know what might be wrong.
Thank you very much for your help!

Hello, user:
1.
Your inverted nipple may be caused by shorter mammary ducts beneath the nipple.
If you wish for the nipple to protrude, you might consider consulting a plastic surgeon.
Given your age, the likelihood of an inverted nipple being caused by a malignant tumor is extremely low.
2.
If you have a lump in your breast, please seek a diagnosis from a breast specialist as soon as possible.
Based on your description, it is most likely that you have a fibrocystic condition (not a true tumor), but it could also be due to mastitis or an abscess (which would be accompanied by skin redness and swelling).
It is advisable to have a specialist examine it, and they should be able to provide results quickly.
Wishing you good health.

Dear Patient,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding breast development and pain. It’s completely understandable to have questions about changes in your body, especially when it comes to something as significant as breast health. Let’s break down your concerns and provide some clarity.

Firstly, regarding the appearance of your nipples and breast size, it is important to note that breast development can vary significantly from person to person. Factors such as genetics, hormonal levels, and body composition all play a role in how breasts develop. It is not uncommon for some individuals to have less prominent nipples or variations in breast shape and size, even into their late teens and early adulthood. If you have not experienced any other symptoms, such as discharge or changes in skin texture, this may simply be a normal variation for you.

However, your recent experience of sudden and severe pain in your right breast, especially accompanied by the discovery of a hard lump, is concerning and warrants further investigation. Breast pain, known as mastalgia, can arise from various causes, including hormonal changes, cysts, or fibrocystic breast changes. While many instances of breast pain are benign, the presence of a new lump, particularly if it feels different from the surrounding tissue, should not be ignored.

In your case, the sudden onset of pain and the discovery of a hard mass could indicate several possibilities. One common condition is a fibroadenoma, which is a benign tumor made up of glandular and connective tissue. These can sometimes cause discomfort and may feel firm to the touch. Another possibility is a cyst, which can also be painful and may fluctuate in size. However, it is crucial to rule out any more serious conditions, including breast infections or, although less common in younger individuals, breast cancer.

Given your symptoms, I strongly recommend that you schedule an appointment with a healthcare provider, preferably a breast specialist or a gynecologist. They may perform a clinical breast exam and recommend imaging studies such as a mammogram or ultrasound to evaluate the lump further. These tests can help determine the nature of the lump and whether any additional treatment is necessary.

In the meantime, keep track of any changes in your breasts, including the size and texture of the lump, any changes in pain levels, or the appearance of the skin over the breast. If you experience any additional symptoms, such as fever, redness, or discharge from the nipple, seek medical attention promptly.

It’s important to remember that while breast changes can be alarming, many conditions are benign and treatable. Early evaluation and intervention can provide peace of mind and ensure that any necessary treatment is initiated promptly.

Take care of yourself, and don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional to address your concerns. Your health is important, and getting the right support is crucial.

Best wishes for your health and well-being.
