Breast hardness?

Hello, Dr.
Zhou.
My breasts feel hard when I squeeze them, particularly around the nipple and areola.
I've had this since I started developing.
When I asked my friend, she said it was normal because I was still developing, and that it should go away once development is complete.
I didn't pay much attention to it, but now at 17, I still feel like there hasn't been much change.
Also, during my menstrual period, my nipples become particularly prominent and painful.
Is this normal? Could there be a problem?

Hua Hua, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2016/03/19

Dr. Zhou Jiazhen reply Breast and Thyroid

Dear Huahua: It's completely normal; just pay attention to any swelling or pain, and make sure to have regular check-ups.

Breast hardness during development is a common concern among adolescents, and it is important to understand the physiological changes that occur during this period. At the age of 17, you are likely still experiencing the natural processes of breast development, which can include changes in breast tissue density, sensitivity, and overall shape.

During puberty, the breasts undergo significant changes due to hormonal fluctuations, primarily driven by estrogen and progesterone. These hormones stimulate the growth of breast tissue, including the development of glandular tissue and fat. As a result, it is normal for some individuals to experience a feeling of hardness or firmness in their breasts, especially around the nipple and areola area. This can be attributed to the increased glandular tissue and the development of ducts that are preparing for potential lactation in the future.

The sensation of hardness can also be influenced by the menstrual cycle. Many individuals notice that their breasts become more sensitive, swollen, or tender in the days leading up to their period due to hormonal changes. This is often referred to as cyclical mastalgia, which is a common condition that affects many women and can cause discomfort or pain in the breasts. The increased blood flow and fluid retention during this time can contribute to the feeling of fullness or hardness.

It is also worth noting that breast tissue can vary significantly from person to person. Some individuals may have denser breast tissue, which can feel firmer, while others may have more fatty tissue, leading to a softer feel. Both variations are normal, and breast density can change over time due to factors such as age, hormonal changes, and body composition.

If you are experiencing significant pain, discomfort, or any unusual changes in your breasts, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. While breast tenderness and hardness can be normal, it is essential to rule out any underlying conditions, especially if the symptoms are persistent or worsening.

In summary, the hardness you are feeling in your breasts is likely a normal part of your development, influenced by hormonal changes and the natural growth of breast tissue. It is common for breasts to feel different at various stages of the menstrual cycle, and many individuals experience tenderness or sensitivity during this time. However, if you have concerns about your breast health or if you notice any unusual changes, seeking medical advice is always a prudent step. Regular self-examinations and awareness of your body can help you identify any changes that may require further investigation.
