The breasts may feel firm or hard?

Hello, when I press down on my breasts, I notice a large area in the middle that feels hard.
Is this normal tissue or is there a problem? Both sides of my breasts feel the same, and I usually don't have any special issues.
I'm not sure if this is something every woman experiences.
Is this normal? Thank you.

Guo Guo, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/04/24

If you are concerned, you can have a breast ultrasound examination.
Thank you!

More Info

Breast hardness or firmness can be a common concern among women, especially during their teenage years and early adulthood. It is important to understand that breast tissue is composed of various components, including glandular tissue, connective tissue, and fat. The proportion of these components can vary significantly from person to person, leading to differences in breast texture and firmness.

In your case, feeling a hard area in the breast when applying pressure is not uncommon. This hardness can be attributed to several factors:
1. Breast Composition: As mentioned, breasts are made up of different types of tissue. Glandular tissue, which is responsible for milk production, can feel firmer than fatty tissue. In younger women, especially those who are still developing, the glandular tissue may be more prominent, leading to a firmer feel.

2. Hormonal Changes: Hormonal fluctuations throughout the menstrual cycle can also affect breast firmness. Many women experience breast tenderness and changes in texture due to hormonal shifts, particularly before their periods. This can lead to temporary changes in how the breast feels.

3. Fibrocystic Changes: Some women experience fibrocystic breast changes, which can cause lumps or areas of hardness in the breast. These changes are usually benign and can be influenced by hormonal levels. They often fluctuate with the menstrual cycle and may feel more pronounced at certain times.

4. Previous Injuries: You mentioned that your girlfriend had a previous injury to her breast during childhood. While it is unlikely that this would cause long-term issues, any trauma to the breast can lead to changes in the tissue, including the formation of scar tissue, which may feel firmer than surrounding areas.

5. Breast Development: At 18 years old, your girlfriend is still in a stage of breast development. Breasts can continue to change in size and shape well into the early twenties. It is possible that the firmness she is experiencing is part of her natural development process.

6. Breast Health: While most cases of breast hardness are benign, it is always important to monitor any changes. If there are new lumps, persistent pain, or changes in the breast's appearance, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation. Regular breast self-exams and awareness of one’s own body can help in identifying any unusual changes early on.

In conclusion, feeling a firm area in the breast is generally normal, especially in younger women. However, it is essential to maintain awareness of any changes and consult a healthcare provider if there are concerns. Regular check-ups and open communication about breast health can help alleviate worries and ensure that any potential issues are addressed promptly.
