Acne issues?
I am only 15 years old, but I have a face full of acne.
My mom says it will get better as I grow up and that it's just puberty.
Is that really the case? Also, I have been using some Shiseido cosmetics, but their acne lotion makes my face feel oily after applying it.
Should I continue using it? Additionally, could you recommend some well-known dermatology clinics in the northern part of Taiwan? Thank you!
Fei Fei, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2000/11/14
Dr. Zheng Lizhen reply Dermatology
During puberty, increased hormone levels lead to heightened sebum production, making it easier to develop acne.
However, this does not mean you have to endure a face full of "acne" throughout your teenage years, leaving marks that could last a lifetime.
Taking proactive steps to treat acne now can save you time and money in the future that would otherwise be spent on scar revision.
Skincare products are supplementary and cannot replace medical treatment.
If a product feels greasy after use, it may not be suitable for you, and you should look for a lighter alternative.
There are many dermatologists in Taipei, so you can seek treatment nearby.
If you require more advanced treatment or special medications, you can then go to a larger hospital.

More Info
Acne is a common skin condition that affects many teenagers, often due to hormonal changes during puberty. At 15 years old, it is entirely normal to experience acne as your body undergoes various changes. While some individuals may find that their acne improves as they grow older, others may continue to struggle with it into adulthood. Therefore, it is essential to take proactive steps in managing your skin health rather than waiting for it to resolve on its own.
Regarding your use of Shiseido products, it’s crucial to choose skincare items that are suitable for acne-prone skin. If the acne treatment you are using feels oily or heavy on your skin, it may not be the best fit for you. Look for products labeled as "non-comedogenic," which means they are formulated not to clog pores. Additionally, consider using lightweight, oil-free moisturizers and treatments that contain ingredients known to help with acne, such as salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide.
Here are some tips for managing acne effectively:
1. Cleansing: Use a gentle cleanser twice daily to remove excess oil and impurities. Avoid harsh scrubs that can irritate the skin and worsen acne.
2. Moisturizing: Even if your skin is oily, it is essential to moisturize. Look for oil-free, non-comedogenic moisturizers that hydrate without adding extra oil.
3. Spot Treatments: For active breakouts, consider using spot treatments that contain salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide. These ingredients can help reduce inflammation and clear clogged pores.
4. Sun Protection: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen daily, as some acne treatments can make your skin more sensitive to the sun. Look for oil-free, non-comedogenic sunscreens.
5. Avoid Picking: It can be tempting to pick at or pop pimples, but this can lead to scarring and further irritation. Try to keep your hands away from your face.
6. Diet and Hydration: Maintain a balanced diet and drink plenty of water. Some studies suggest that high-glycemic foods and dairy may exacerbate acne in some individuals.
7. Consult a Dermatologist: If over-the-counter products are not effective, consider visiting a dermatologist. They can provide personalized recommendations and may prescribe topical or oral medications to help manage your acne.
As for finding reputable dermatology clinics in your area, I recommend searching online for reviews and asking for recommendations from friends or family. Look for clinics that specialize in adolescent dermatology, as they will have experience treating teenage skin concerns.
In summary, while it is common to experience acne during your teenage years, taking proactive steps in your skincare routine can help manage and reduce breakouts. Be patient, as it may take time to find the right products and treatments that work for your skin. If you continue to struggle with acne, don't hesitate to seek professional help from a dermatologist.
