I think my nose is broken..?
I seem to have very little airflow through my nose, and I've always been breathing through my mouth.
However, sometimes my nose suddenly runs continuously, and it drips like water without any stickiness.
Additionally, when I sleep, it often runs down my throat.
Recently, during several episodes of severe nasal discharge, I've even noticed a foul smell.
I have two questions: 1.
Where does the nasal mucus come from? I feel like I drink less water than the amount of mucus I expel.
2.
Is my nose in very bad condition? Do I need to see a doctor?

More Info
Nasal issues, particularly excessive mucus production and nasal congestion, can be quite bothersome and may indicate underlying health concerns. Understanding the causes of these symptoms is crucial for effective management and treatment.
1. Understanding Nasal Mucus Production
Nasal mucus is produced by the mucous membranes lining the nasal passages. Its primary functions include trapping dust, allergens, and pathogens, thereby protecting the respiratory system. The production of mucus can increase due to various factors, including infections, allergies, and environmental irritants.
When you experience a sudden increase in nasal mucus, especially if it is clear and watery, it may be due to:
- Allergic Rhinitis: This condition is triggered by allergens such as pollen, dust mites, or pet dander. The body responds to these allergens by producing more mucus, leading to symptoms like sneezing, nasal congestion, and a runny nose.
- Viral Infections: Common colds or other viral infections can lead to increased mucus production. Initially, the mucus may be clear and watery, but it can become thicker and discolored if a secondary bacterial infection occurs.
- Non-Allergic Rhinitis: This condition can be triggered by irritants such as smoke, strong odors, or changes in weather. It can cause similar symptoms to allergic rhinitis but does not involve an allergic response.
- Sinusitis: Inflammation of the sinuses can lead to excessive mucus production, often accompanied by facial pain, pressure, and a foul smell if there is an infection.
2. When to See a Doctor
Given your symptoms of excessive nasal mucus, particularly the foul odor and the sensation of mucus dripping down your throat, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional. Here are some indicators that you should seek medical attention:
- Persistent Symptoms: If your symptoms last more than 10 days or worsen over time, it may indicate a bacterial infection or chronic condition that requires medical intervention.
- Foul Smell: The presence of a bad odor can suggest a sinus infection or nasal obstruction, which may require treatment, such as antibiotics or other medications.
- Difficulty Breathing: If you experience significant difficulty breathing through your nose, it may indicate severe nasal obstruction or other complications.
- Other Symptoms: Accompanying symptoms such as fever, facial pain, or swelling should prompt a visit to the doctor.
Conclusion
In summary, nasal mucus is a natural defense mechanism of the body, but excessive production can indicate underlying issues such as allergies, infections, or other nasal conditions. If you find yourself frequently relying on mouth breathing, experiencing foul-smelling mucus, or having persistent nasal symptoms, it is essential to consult with an ENT specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, potentially including nasal endoscopy or imaging studies, to determine the underlying cause and recommend appropriate treatment options. Early intervention can help prevent complications and improve your quality of life.
